  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

Hi Sean,

the current Laing M02 is probably the best rig you can get right now for <2.000USD.

Not sure when the new version will be out, since there are still many things to plan, engineer and test. Best ask Vitaliy, since he's in contact with the manufacturer.

I think / hope it will be worth the time waiting for the new version.

Can't help you with the strobe, sorry.

Cheers
David

When is the rig going to be done?

Must be very soon. Right now it is mostly LEMO boxes prototypes polishing.

How will it be tested and how soon could I get one for 1,800 if it is legit?

We'll return to test discussion very soon.

Firm is working on finished LEMO boxes design now, I'll post upadate as soon as it'll be possible.

We and our clients trust Steadicam tools to work exactly or better than advertised. It takes so much work to learn Steadicam, seems silly to skimp on the rig.

Besides, enough of our economy is syphoned off to China for cheap imitations, Steadicam are made right here in North America (California and BC) and well made, to be durable.

Cheap crap fake Steadicams have all kinds of problems, now and with wear. Bad, uneven arm movement, time consuming balancing (it takes 3X as long to balance a GlideCam as it does a real Streadicam) squeaks, springs that loose tension over time, etc. etc. Plus you show up set with a dollar store version of gear, maybe your clients figure they can pay you less, or that maybe you are less serious and commited than the person who opted for a "real" Steadicam, or a high-end rig like an Action Cam (although this is less obvious to many clients than just Steadicam).

Whether or not you think clients should think this way, many do think this way. Eventually that little extra every time covers the price difference, and you still have your nice Steadicam rig, and you have still supported the local economy.

First of all, not all of us here are from North America. Many are from Europe, Australia and so on.
And at least for me - would be this system or nothing at all. So I'm asking you - which system would be better ? This one ? - or nothing, zero .

And buying a real steadicam or any kind of tools depends on the budget that certain project has. Of course. If you have a "real" budget you can pay top dollars for gear. But if you have a zero budget short movie it wouldn't make sense to pay much for gear. Or do you think all projects have the same budget ?
And by the way, have you seen the movies filmed with a super improvised steadicam (20 $ cost I think) made by Peter "lord of the rings" Jackson ?
