  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Custom Steadicam for REDusers <1800USD - Post your ideas

I am curious what the difference is between the one you guys are trying to modify the design to you liking and the already designed one I posted link to at the first page?
http://www.thecinecity.com/eshop/FL...meras-weighing-up-to-5-15kgs-11lbs-33lbs.html

Comes with Docking stand, Carbon fiber, battery plate (AB or V-mount), Junction box with volt indicator. Wired for voltage and monitor. $1500 before eventual group buy rebate. Looks very similar to the Chinese one (probably original parts from China).
Any modifications that are wanted?
Sure they are open for it.

the indian steadicam is JUNK

5v should just be a normal size usb port i think

I would like to ad 3 D-tap female on top of the Sled !

I don't know for others but I use Dtap for all my accessories...so I really need it on a sled for Follow Focus and wireless or maybe sometime led panel attach to the camera...

Do you really want clumsy D-tap connectors on your sled? I asked the manufacturer to add 2pin LEMO to flying wire cables, so you can make yourself a small junction box without a problem. But I think it would be a pity to add those large and (in contrast to LEMO) not to stable connectors to the sled. Same for USB. You could either solder a USB cable / plug to a flying wire cable or make a small junction box.

If there's interest, I can ask the manufacturer to make a small additional junction box witch you could purchase for roughly 90USD (I would guess) with 2pin LEMO in and 2x D-Tap, 2x XLR and 2x USB 5v out. What do you think?

Dear David,
yes I really would like D-tap on my sled, I don't know why so many people doesn't like this connector because for me it has always worked just fine and it is easier to fix yourself than a so tiny Lemo...
I don't think two D-tap out will be a pain in the ass to ad and it will be more proper than a flying junction box...
Like every suggestion, let's have a vote to know if the majority is agree or against...
But I don't think it will bother you to have two D-tap that you don't use on your Sled, but it will be maybe helpful one day for you and will be lifesaver for many others right know...isn't it ?

cheers ;-)

Is it just me - or does anyone else find this thread a little ironic...

Not to p*** on anyone's parade - I love and fully support the idea of us getting together to have manufacturers make something special for us at a reasonable cost...

The irony part is in the title (and the subject of this thread) - the "cheap knock off of a stedicam(tm)"...
On one hand we support Jim in his fight against companies who are infringing on RED's copyright - which also has direct ramification on us - the owners of RED gear...
Yet on the other hand we are rallying together for a group buy of a stabilization system that infringes on other esteemed companies...
At the very least - the copyrighted name of "Stedicam(tm)" should not be in the title of any of these threads...

Also note that one of the REDUSER sponsors is GLIDECAM - another official manufacturer of stabilization systems.
Thanks to these sponsors we can enjoy this forum and the wealth of resourceful information on it...

Not only is GLIDECAM a US-based manufacturer (for those who care), but also they were the first to introduce a reasonably priced stabilization systems.
I am sure if we have actually engaged GLIDECAM in this discussion / idea - they would be able to make something for us at price not-to-far-off of this Chinese knock off...
Especially if we could guarantee GLIDECAM the 100+ units purchased...

Just my 2 yen...

:sifone: Peter

PS: And yes - I am a proud owner of a GLIDECAM stabilization system and about to consider buying another one from them...

You're all crazy

You're all crazy

THIS IS JUNK! This thing is all over the place, what's even funnier is that it looks like it's about 6feet long. Its a joke!

I must admit I do feel dirty contemplating this group buy for the reasons Peter has mentioned.

You know, Martin Stevens, Glidecam founder and active Reduser forum member, could have simply reported this and it would be locked, i think, but this just proves what a stand-up and great reduser he is. I would really like for him to shime in and have his say on a rivalling product or a custom Red user system. I would buy from him like I did my Glidecam 4000 plus smooth shooter. My Epic is just on its limits there and I need an upgrade.

But this option is obviously tempting. If this can be done at this price, be of quality, have its own original design and still provide a profit margin to the selling company, I say fair game. What I didn't like to see however is that there are locally complete carbon copyies of Glidecam systems selling at a fraction of the price. The steadicam principle is nothing new and it wasn't invented by Glidecam, but the weights, balance, design of the top sled, arm, vest, etc. is. I am completely against that type of products even if they are a lot cheaper.

I don't see these systems in the same light as a real Steadicam or other top brand.

These are for people who don't do steadicam work all day, everyday. They are starter kits, or gear you use every now and again. Needed gear but not gear you can justify spending what the top brands charge.

If you're a pro and work with steadicam's and make a living doing so, you would never purchase these. You might have done so to enter the craft, so they are what they are

This is amazing.....it's like watching a train wreck that's about to happen.

Wishful thinking will only lead to disappointment and then that will lead to a greater loss when you try to sell this POS. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

NOw here we go again,
If we are done off the topic BS on this thread... Can we please get back to the topic...
What was that "A GUN CONTROL"?
Yes ..
I have a very strict gun control policy: if there's a gun around me, I want to be in control of it as long as bullet does't cost me $5000 each (lol)

train wreck or the indication of a different market not being catered to and an opportunity give a new market what they want.

Are we going to derail this thread. If you don't agree can you post another thread why you think the Chinese stabilizer is a POS, and post all your relevant complaints about it over there including your experience using it and why it sucked. Would appreciate keeping this thread on subject.

Meanwhile... We've been shooting with the CAME system for a week+ now and we love it. If you need a stabilization system, it's $1600 well spent. If you're a steady camera operator looking for $100k+ gigs on mulit-million budgeted projects, then $50,000 for a steadicam is better spent.

This is way over-thinking guys. Do you need the system? Buy it. Are you just curious about it? Skip it. Take a few lessons and learn from some stabilization operators and determine if it's really something you're going to use. Then figure out your budget.

I bought a chinese knock off matte box and it was pretty good, and cost nearly 1/10th as much as an Arri with similar features. Is an Arri mattebox better than my TRUSMT mattebox, oh hell yes. Is it 10x better... eh i dunno. It's not like Arri lost any money from me buying it, because I can't afford any of their matteboxes. Same is true if this stabilizer knock off. I'm only interested in this because it's cheap, and if I can pull of shots that resemble steadicam shots, then perfect. I used to use the $14 DIY steadicam of two pipes with a weight at the bottom http://14dollarstabilizer.org/ for me, this is the next rung up the ladder.

It would be great if glidecam where to get involved in this group buy, but it still would probably be out of my price range. This is also a long shot. 100 people in a group buy is unheard of.

weve already had a few people purchase and report back with nothing but good things to say... people who also own some of the more expensive rigs out there too
