Hi guys,

I'm looking to build a custom NAS 10gb/s ethernet, compatible Windows and Mac. What would be the best cost/performance setup? It needs to be at least 8 bays or more.

Thank you!

On the mac's I use ATTO Thunderlink 10gb ethernet (one per mac pro). On windows I get a 10g board with those "deeper" 10g connectors. I use a Cisco SG500XG-8F8T(has both the deep and the shallow 10g connectors). The cisco router is loud, so it either needs to be in another room or in a isobox (So far all the 10g router/switches I've seen/heard are fairly loud). I think I have 3 macs, 2 linux boxes(double 10g connections each), and 2 windows boxes connected to it without any problems.

My setup is:

Pegasus R8 into a mac mini via thunderbolt. (RAID 5)
Mac mini into SANlink2 10GBe adapter. ---------->

-----------> Netgear XS708E Switch ==========>

2 Macbook Pros connected via Akitio Thunder2 10G adapters
1 Dell with Intel 10G PICe card.
More ports for growth!

I LOVE IT!
Anywhere from 400MB/s to 900MB/s (depending on lots of things from frame size to protocol, etc. Speed variance issues are no problem for my current work through.)

I see lots of room to grow as well. Move from SMB or AFP to SAN via ISCSI and run metadata manager for faster IO performance. Or rebuild the RAID to stripped and gain full speed of R8, once I've setup better backups. Lots of my setup was a balance between speed and price point. I've also got my eye on the Qnap 10GBe/Thunderbolt Box. Worth a look.

Hope this helps.

Wow! Tech Specs say noise level < 35 dBA @ 25C. Is it really that quiet?

I thought thunderbolt networking was just between two devices. Has anyone seen a switch or router?
