  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes, but they bring a lot of documentation to back it up, such as tests they have done, links to scientific white papers, image comparisons. It's all right there in their comments...oh wait, I think all that stuff is missing. :-)

Oh, and I had no idea that RED cameras blow up all of the time. Highly explosive materials REDs are made with, no wonder they are called Weapon.
 
That web site is a little like a highway accident; you kind of rubberneck it as you go past but never want to pay too much attention. I think of it a "light reading." lol
 
Great article! It's exciting to see the MG Weapons rolling out! The comments are truly classic... Typical of NFS "experts"
 
There needs to be a name for this phenomenon. So many people I know say that too much resolution is not a good thing and that no one needs to see this much detail and blah blah blah, and yet at the end of the day when they finally get their hands on a higher resolution camera they all say how great it is. Even the mighty Roger Deakins who in the past was a huge advocate against higher resolution capture said how great the new Alexa camera was after shooting Sicario due to the minor resolution bump (or should I say minor upscaling). Go figure.

...and most of them are uneducated know-it-alls... no wonder the site is called "no film school" :ack2:
 
I don't know what's more entertaining anymore, listening to presidential candidates slag each other off or listening to camera owners slag each other off. Personally I think all owners of specific camera brands should move to a geographically allocated area and build huge walls between each other to prevent immigration so then they can shoot (*) happily ever after knowing they have the best camera in the world without having to qualify it by proving others have the worst camera in the world.

(*) I mean shoot as in capture moving images, that wasn't a concealed (**) attempt to weigh in on the gun control debate.
(**) By concealed I didn't mean weapons either. Just because this is a Weapon forum.

I'm not advocating any specific camera, more than in the way that as an owner I'm marketing my own business and that isn't worse than the Apple/Samsung marketing strategies.
As for the actual discussions about Alexa vs Red, there's a big difference between actually discussing the differences from an educated standpoint, as I wanted to do in the "Alexa and the Dragon sensor" thread under the "Cinematography" section and the uneducated people who spew out opinions that hurt businesses like my own, making producers dislike a specific camera because they heard negative critic from stupid people who might not even have worked with any of them. There are far too many amateur filmmakers with DSLRs who have opinions about Red and Alexa while never even walked a step onto a professional set or touched material in post shot by a professional crew. Me personally, I cannot stand stupid people and when their words influence potential clients to not choose my camera for a project, it hurts my business and that means war :tongue_smilie:

Let's all be humble. I see a lot of harsh rant from your side toward Red too, about their upgrades, their design etc. And not often in a moderate way ^^

I think that goes under educated criticism and that I'm not advocating a specific camera. As a paying customer there is of course criticism if there's something I think is bad, either service or product. One word of advice though, words on the internet often comes forward as more harsh than they actually are, it's in the nature of a subjectively written text that is read objectively. But even though internet is 20 years old, people still seem to be surprised about misunderstandings and arguments boiling over when there's no body language or eye to eye contact involved. So I believe most people look at me as being this raging asshole even though in real life I'm a rather nice guy, I hope :laugh:
 
Open discussion and educated debate is a wonderful thing and I have absolutely no problem digesting (and accepting) well constructed facts that "this camera is better at THIS and THAT"... what I'm eternally tired of are those that then take that point of view into a narrative of "and therefore, that other camera is CRAP at that". Most of these high end cameras are pretty damn good at a lot of things. The scale of capability out there isn't "BEST AND WORST" .. it's BEST.. then varying degrees of close to that, sliding down the scale. There are many marginal deviations and then also personal preferences; I'd never deny an aficionado or image connoisseur their bragging rights of 'best', but anyone that takes that position as "everything else is therefore CRAP" is a yoghurt in my books.

I agree. I mean, anyone who thinks Alexa is a bad camera is rather out there, but so is anyone who denies the better supersampling to 4K that Red has over Alexa. I think it's rather easy to spot what is a rational voice/opinion and who's not.
