  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Current Value of Scarlet

Very true.

I get your question - it is not about value - it is specifically about resale price. And, as a few have stated, who would possibly know, as it is not a very robust and active resale market. All information is anecdotal and nuanced; how many hours, whether it came with accessories/modules (how much of the price reflected those additions), the location, shipping, timing. Markets like this aren't like the stock market where all shares of stock for a given company are identical. This is an "inefficient market" and, as such, the best answer really is "...whatever someone is willing to pay."

ps anyone wana buy my digi beta? lol

Hahahahahaaha

Besides RED, digibeta defied gravity in resales for quite a while.
Remember that I was seriously trying to fund a Sony 500 dvcam at about 50k$ at a point, before first being pointed at the Varicam and then noticed RED

http://www.broadcastbaron.com/infodsr500wsl.htm

Talk about losing value...

The varicam package I was pricing out just came short of 300k with deck and all, one year before it was ditched by Pana...

I could work the rest of my professional life on a R1M if I had to...

The guy in this thread thinks that his Scarlet-X (#02835) + Ti Canon Mount + Side SSD +zero warranty + buyer pays RED transfer = $11,000… (in the RED store they are $11,450) - Not sure where he gets his math done...

The re-sale value of my Scarlets when I'm done with them will be $0 - tax wise they are written off in the first year; in reality they are 'paid' for in jobs by the end of the first few months / weeks. Eventually they will end up in my equipment room with some of my dead cameras - OR - they will be
donated like the rest of my dead cameras to younger filmmakers who need a start. I've never purchased a camera (leica, Hassy, Mamiya, ARRI, Panasonic, Sony) with any thought to resale value.

Its all supply and demand. Just look at the quad module, there is an over supply of them so the demand drops as does the price. the 5' touch LCD was being sold used for $300 more because there was a short supply. If the supply of Scarlets drops due to high order volume and puts them on backorder than the demand will spike and drive the prices up. If you buy a camera just to worry about resale than you should be buying it at all and just renting it.

On another note, I just took a Beta SP deck to the electronic recycler to get rid of it. Nothing like junking a $30.000 deck because there is no demand for it.

Glad someone else enjoys my pov.

I found myself requesting a sony dvcam deck the other day.
That just made that deck not gointo trash.
Costed more than 20k in its time...

Content is king.
No matter how bad i despice Microsoft, I love Bill Gates for that vision...

Gunleik I have a DSR-1500a collecting dust here, Ill trade you for a 100mm Sacthler head ;)

Yes you can sell your camera tomorrow for figure X - Y . maybe loosing some $$$$, how much money did you save by not hiring, by having the camera right there to use when needed.

Also a big question...........What are you going to do after its sold ?

A) Buy another camera, consigning your self to loosing money.

B) Hire a camera when you need it, paying for someone else to own it whilst loosing money.

C) Upgrade to Epic loosing more money by continuing with Red.

But here's the secret it's all about perception .........replace the word "loosing" with "MAKING" .........things start looking different & if you can't see it that way, then maybe you can't afford to be in the business.

I believe this primarily depends upon how quickly someone can get a new Scarlet and the required accessories shipped if ordered today. If the backlog is 3 months, prices for used Scarlet packages will go up simply due to opportunity cost. Most people willing to pay for a Scarlet today cannot afford to wait a long time for it because they have a job to do. Same will happen with EPIC packages.

IT is your duty as a Red owner to sell this fir as much as you can...duh! If its mint, sell it for $500 less than the new price. If it has a scratch, heck take another $100 off. BY NO MEANS should you be doing what i see others doing: DEVALUING the market by selling the whole shebang for $7000 OBO. This is Dangerous territory. Not more than a week ago i had my Scarlet for sale for $14,000 with a few offers. Then I decided to keep it for a certain job, the next day Jim made his announcement to wait till the 2nd. That is fine, I made my choice and I own it. BUT just because the new scarlet's cost $10,105 doesn't mean you need to take off $3k!!!! What is going on?! lol. Why would you do that? The Scarlet doesn't need t a deep discount. Let me repeat, it doesn't need a deep discount. Get more for your camera.

I sound like a raving crazyman, but that's all i see the past few days..... Craziness.

$10,150.00 (Purchased new)

- $1000 (transfer of ownership)
There is a cost of around $1000 involved to transfer ownership to the new user. Only then will the new user be able to use firmware updates and have access to RED's repairing, maintenance and upgrade services. Most people, I gather, would opt for this.

- $1,537 per year (Annual depreciation per year using a straight-line depreciation)
Cost of fixed asset is around $10,150. Using the Red One as a baseline: The Scarlet-X maybe has a useful life of 4 years (from general availability until end-of-life) with a residual value of around >4k (as the Red One is being sold now). Again these are guesstimates. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depreciation#Straight-line_depreciation

My guess would be around ~$7600.00 – $6600.00 as the resale value.

Obviously other factors come into play like demand, volatility, brand perceptions, etc. It's probably not a good time to sell either since there's still the unknown upgrade paths that might potentially increase its value and that might still be available for Scarlet and Epic owners.

My 2 cents.

they dont have these back order issues anymore Michael. did you see how fast they filled all the stages AND shipped 1000's of scarlets. Bro, Red's new efficiency is a BIG reason prices got cut.

And for some reason many people get all DRAMATIC and claim "Red fucked them... " etc etc...

PREDICTION.... used prices will GO UP in the next 90 days ... ESPECIALLY after this shit dies down and all the R1 MX are gone. Not like there are 100K Scarlets out there as there are DSLR's...

for those of you who feel SCREWED... I paid $50,000 for "London" ($10K premium) to jump the Line and then EPIC M came out and 1000 people cut in front of me and I sold that camera for $20K... thats $30K or the price of 4 Scarlets... fortunately Ill make it back as I sold my Epics and Scarlets for premiums early this year and Im now buying them back for enough discount to cover that loss.

PATIENCE - markets are fickle...
