  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Current Value of Scarlet

Again, creativity doesn't affect the resale value of a used Scarlet with side SSD and Canon Al mount.

Ah, that a RED camera could hold value as well as a Corvette of any year! :) Alas, far from possible.

Still, if you don't understand the question I'll put it a different way - my bad for not being clear. What is the current resale value of a used Scarlet with side SSD and Canon Al mount?

Does it make you feel less creative knowing that your Scarlet has gone down in price?

I dont quite understand the question?

Before Nov 2012, subjects such as this rarely existed.

Now all of a sudden people are questioning their decision.

This isnt a 2013 Corvette :P

Hey if you are looking to sell yours, Ill give you 1K for it :)

Four votes for under $6K. Lower than the Deal of a Lifetime sale of two weeks ago.

Yup, butthat is whithout the recheck/guarantee RED offers...
Which neans something else.

If I buy a plasma in the shop now, it has lost half its value before I am out the door...

I have one up here in the FS section W/ side SSD and PL mount at 8,900 which i think is a fair price... but I've not had any real offers yet, so the resale may be a bit lower than that.

I'm assuming you mean the tanking Scarlet and not the value-holding Corvette! :)

That's five votes for the resale value of a used Scarlet with SSD and Canon Al mount under $6K. I probably will sell my 2nd Scarlet. I purchased it before finding out their incredible shrinking resale value last week. So, although I now know the truth about them, I still may need to get out from under a loss. One falling brick is better than two! :)

Gunleik, that's terrible! Thanks for the heads-up about displays - I don't own a television and probably won't but I guess it's good to know that there's one thing out there that drops faster than a RED!

I think 8,500 would be fair. But I agree with others and think we would struggle to get it till the last of the R1's are sold. The key is definitely the Scarlet Dragon sensor news for us. If RED looks after the Scarlet users with Dragon by pricing it within realistic reach, both in price and timeline, then used Scarlets value will be solid for those folks looking to save a couple of thousand and be a Dragon Scarlet owner, and should be able to sell around 8.5 - 9k.

I wouldn't think it would be a wise time to try and sell your Scarlet now, but hey, if you can get 8K or more, I would think most users would be happy with that. Otherwise why sell. I'm not selling regardless. If I was entering the RED market now, I would have bought a RED one and gone crazy over it. I used to dream of that camera.... 4.5K for 4K and 120fps @ 2k?? Holy shit. What a dream come true. Except it came a year too late for me. But I've backed RED and the Scarlet, so I'm really looking forward to news on Scarlets upgrade path.

Actually that ais quite ok, as I bought into an image and didn't buy the chips for resale...

So much information on other, unrelated subjects, to be sure.

What is current resale value of a used Scarlet with SSD and Canon Al mount?

How long is a piece of string?

*ahem*

I believe the answer to your question is Whatever someone wants to pay for it.

Put your camera up and see what offers you get. I would assume the highest is your answer.

The new scarlet pricing is for the brain only. I purchased a battle tested scarlet that came with the canon mount and SSD side module for about $7,700USD. That camera new would run $11,145 USD after taxes . I saved almost $3,500.... I don't know about you but I'm pumped!

I got a different number when I did the math on this, am I misunderstanding something? I'm not calculating taxes, of course, since they'll scale accordingly.

Battle Tested Scarlet (plus RED Armor): $8609.05
New Scarlet w/ SSD & Canon Mount (1 Year Warranty Built in): $10,150.00

I believe the number is $1540.95, unless you were content with the 90 day warranty.

Wise choice! Buying a RED product counting on any kind of resale is incredibly unwise, as you and others including the manufacturer themselves have pointed out. :)

Hm...
I have worked for a while at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corp, buying F900's, HPX3000's and mostly any ENG camera you can think of.
None of those have held 50% after a year.
If you exclude RED, my calculus is actually a bit optimistic...

And mind you, these are 100k$+ camerasystems...

Problem is that non-pro users aren't used to this.
Nothing wrong with RED, really.

Most pro users I know, buy cameras to make images, not to sell cameras...

Right on, thanks for the perspective. I don't own any of those but it's interesting to know that RED isn't alone in spectacular loss of value. I'm definitely converted now. Do not expect any kind of resale value when buying a RED product.

Or sony, or panasonic or canon or arri.

You have any real idea of what those digi or SR decks cost, and what their real value is today?

Or the "fridge" connected to a D21?

Sorry, but this is how things work.

I get your question - it is not about value - it is specifically about resale price. And, as a few have stated, who would possibly know, as it is not a very robust and active resale market. All information is anecdotal and nuanced; how many hours, whether it came with accessories/modules (how much of the price reflected those additions), the location, shipping, timing. Markets like this aren't like the stock market where all shares of stock for a given company are identical. This is an "inefficient market" and, as such, the best answer really is "...whatever someone is willing to pay."

Great to know. Again, I only have a RED (apart from a 5D) and I'm on board now with the knowledge that one would be absolutely insane to think a RED product will have any kind of resale. We are in complete agreement! :)
