Hello guys,

i know there has been some threads about it and i did a good amount of research on it too but i wonder if anyone can give me some Advice / Tips / further information of how to handle a professional 3D Production on 2 RED ONE Cameras from Preparation of the shoot to Postproduction here in Europe. 3 D Rigs seem to be not so widespread than over in the US, and especially Technical Know How, and People who really did some successfull professional grade shots seem to be nowhere around.

So what Rigs would you rent in Europe ? Get a 3D Consultant from the USA or better Europe ( he will be paid wellof course) ? Or get the Rig and an Expert both from the USA ? Should Focus Pullers already have worked on 3 D Shoots before ? Best way of convinient On Screen Monitoring? And Post, would you go Scratch, or alternative, like Speedgrade or other tools ?

Thank you guys

Ruf mal den Christian an, der hat bereits einiges in 3D gemacht (auch mit RED), der kann dir bestimmt weiter helfen, P&S Technik baut auch ein sehr gutes 3D Rig.

Ouch. Hopefully this isn't the future of steadicam :-)

The recorder girl is cool though...

3D Rig for 2 RED One

3D Rig for 2 RED One

Hey alexjentz,

Manuel Wenger already mentioned me/us (Thanks Manuel!). We already did 2 stereoskopic projects with RED Ones. You can check out some pictures of this shoots on our website:

http://filmklappen.de/night_tale.html
http://filmklappen.de/3d_ludwig.html

Due to earlier software versions and a couple of other reasons we had to fight with some problems, which we have now solved.

We were also involved in the shoot were the steadicam foto was taken (btw. the recorder girl just LOOKS cool!).

As you have some more question I send you my contact details, so you can contact me whenever you want.

If Red makes Scarlet/DSMC and Epic easy to shoot stereoscopic, it would so kick arse!

Hi Alex,

I live in LA, so am very familiar with the stereo world here. As far as production, there are 3 very well-known rigs with one coming up...

3ality Digital
ParadiseFX
Pace Technologies
Stereoscope (still coming...)

I do *not* want to get into a religious discussion about the merits of each of these rigs. :) And I apologize for leaving anybody out.

But I would recommend calling these companies and paying a day rate for a day of consulting. Sitting down with Howard/Steve/Victor at 3ality, Tim/Max at Paradise, Ryan/Vince at Pace, or Jeff/Bernie at Stereoscope would give you a ton of information you don't already have.

And to give you an idea of the post tools...

3ality owns SCRATCH and Pablo
Paradise owns Speedgrade
Pace owns Pablo
Stereoscope owns Pablo
Walden owns SCRATCH
Fotokem owns SCRATCH and Pablo
Modern Videofilm owns SCRATCH and Pablo

There are many others, but in general, I think the dominant tools in realtime Stereo post right now are SCRATCH, Pablo, and Speedgrade.

Best,

Lucas

Hey guys,

... the Steadicam Pic makes me wonder too ;) ...

thanks for your fast and helpful replies, thats excatly the results i needed, the Forum is just overwhelmingly efficient :) i am getting into contact with people now.

Lucas, i just have two specific Questions regarding Scratch:

Does SCRATCHCINE support Stereo Workflow too, especially for example for on Set Checks ?

Is it possible to preview the 2 Video Streams in parallel over 2 DVI Displays on an extra Graphic Card or is it only possible with Quadro SDI Outs ?

Thank you and good night from Germany

Alex

Lucas is right on the Mark.

I was the consulting engineer for the 3Ality Live 3D feed at the NAB 2008.

The 3Ality rig is very sophisticated and makes use of Carbon Fiber.

The cameras we used were the Sony 1500's for the live feed and also for
the U23D movie.

Just tested the PS Technic Rig it seemed to be alittle under weight for the Reds any time you panned or moved the whole thing would shake, not a good thing when you are shooting 3D. The price was attractive but found it not really production ready, let me know if there is any similar priced rigs out there.
