I saw no one had a thread here on this yet (turns out they did and I jumped the gun, but it was more focused on subscription pricing then on buy to own pricing, so the threads are somewhat different)... But I think its pretty big news and wanted to see what some of you felt. To lay it out plainly check out this link, its helpful because it features many of the other links you need to read the whole story:
http://prodesigntools.com/last-chance-to-upgrade-adobe-cs2-cs3-cs4-to-cs5.html
Basically the pricing structure is changing, there is subscriptions available, but no one with anything other then CS5.0 gets a discount on upgrades when CS6.0 drops if you want to stick with the pay to own option. I am sure many of you fellow Redusers are on 5.0, if not 5.5 so this is probably not an issue for most of us.
I like the monthly subscriptions, I wonder if that will one day become the sole source of access for CS? It seems like a really good way to combat piracy, and it is great for freelancers for when a month goes by without a gig, or if you only use that NLE when your not on Avid, etc.
I could see myself really liking this new subscription option by saving some cash when I don't need the suite for weeks on end...
Currently I am on 5.0 and I wonder if I can get 6.5 when its out in 2 1/2 years or if they will only accept 5.5 onward for 6.5 discounted upgrades? I asked our always polite local favorite Adobe rep via PM earlier today, but I think my question is a little too forward looking to really know at this point, but if I could get it answered before CS6.0 is discounted at NAB/April/whenever it would be really helpful on figuring out if I want to update then or jump to the subscription based pricing model at that juncture. I think having both options is wonderful, but more details would help me figure out what my future needs should be based on. I love the subscription option but depending on upgrade pricing and the answer to this question I might stay on the old pricing method... Still somewhat divided on what I should go for...
PS whoops just saw the other thread about the subscriptions...but this one is more focused on the pay to own deal and I can't figure out how to delete threads, (though surely there must be some way to), so I'll let the mods see if they want to combine this into it, or delete it out right...my mistake guys, sorry!
