  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CS5.5 and RED/EPIC full disclosure

maybe 3D stereo clips can be synced and re-created as virtual clips in the project window.. and syncing is done the same way as the audio and video in CS5.5..
and playback to support nvidia's 3D vision..

how about an update to fix the time code bug. I don't think we should have to shell out for 5.5 to fix something thats patently broken despite the workaround

Unfortunately it wasn't something we could address in a dot release... We tried. However, the reasons for updating to 5.5 for red users are long and fun...

Cheers

And I think that it would be nice to already when you create your project, have the ability to set as a S3D project, so everything you import asks for the other eye to be imported (if it doest find it automatically obviously)...and that the right and the left eye in the project panel appears only as one file.
This seems like a good idea. Perhaps instead of an entire project being selected as 3D, this could simply be an option for when creating a new sequence - like a checkbox or something similar.

I also like the idea of having the timeline take on 3D specific functions when doing this (ie, automatically searching for the left and right eyes and placing convergence controls in the effects panel)

One area for concern I can see with using one track for S3D clips is in the application of effects. It seems to me that in some circumstances when applying an effect you will want it to apply to both L and R shots. Others times you may only want it to apply to one (when trying to match a slight difference between the two cameras colour balance). In addition to this, when making changes to effects, the changes made will often need to be updated on both L and R shots.

To solve this, I would propose that when editing on a 3D sequence, there are two effects panels; one for the left eye and the other for the right. When an effect is applied to an S3D clip, the effect is applied to both the left and right shots and this is reflected in both effects panels. When a change is made, by default this effect is linked to both L and R shots and updated accordingly. A "link" icon could be next to the effect and this could be disabled (unchecked) if one wants to update only one eye.

Another small idea followed on from this. When dragging effects onto an S3D clip, the default should be to apply the effect to both L and R shots - however it would be good if we could simply hold the effect over the clip before releasing and then have a pop up appear beside the cursor. This pop up would then allow allow us to choose between - "apply to right eye", "apply to left eye" or "apply to both eyes". Alternatively one could simply drag the effect into the Effects panel for the particular eye wanted.

Anyway, just thinking out loud being that you wanted extra feedback on 3D workflows Dave :)

thats all great points... maybe an alternative to having 2 streams of effects would be having one effect called something like: separate eye/split eye/isolate eye.. where you choose left or right (when choosing left your effect would have a red marker, and right would have a cian/green marker) . then any effect that you drag and drop on top of this effect, would became a child, and then this effects would only apply to the eye previously chosen in the "father" effect...like the "one view" node inside nuke (where you isolate the stream to the desired eye).

Two More Questions ...

Two More Questions ...

David -- Thanks for the updates and info. I have a couple more things I haven't seen covered in the questions/responses thus far.

  1. Will there be a way to control Source Settings on R3D Files from After Effects?
  2. Are the Timecode Audio Issues Fixed?
  3. Will I be able to import an EDL from Avid with Embedded Audio?
Hi Guys,

2. We fixed all known timecode issues with RED footage and audio sync.

1. Source settings have been in AE since CS4 (I think it was 4) it is available through interpret footage more options.
2. Yes as far as we know
3. That is a good question... Don't think I personally looked at that. We made lots of improvements to FCP XML import of red footage.

Cheers

i would like to request features for s3d as well.

s3d blu-ray authoring should be already here I think.

It's already entering the consumer market, and I think It seems not so hard to implement afaik it could be done quiet quickly

+1 vote for s3d native capabilities

wow the S3D requests are overwhelming. I need to try my hands on some stereoscopic shooting.

gopro 3d setup, cheapest way to play around with 3d! and you can drop it out of a plane and it will still work. :D

i heart the gopro

Dave -- Thanks for the updates. I've already upgraded to Production Premium CS5.5.

Now . . . Release Date?

Or possibly, there could be a toggle on every effect that lets you separate that effect into the two eyes - might be easier than applying an effect on an effect :)

yeahh scratch what i said..this is simpler =P (left and right button, click on one to disable.. click again enable.. default both are enable or something like it...)

just hope that native s3d gets in cs6 with lots of goodies =D

edit: David will PPro be able one day to export to CinemaDNG?
