  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CS4 to REDCine or Color?

Hi,

It might be a dummy question but i have to ask;

We are editing in CS4 and we want to use either Apple Color or REDCine for color correction. Because we do not have AfterEffects. And our best option is using REDCine as color tool.

1.Can we get edl list from CS4 and import to REDCine?
2.Can we get TIFF sequence and import it to AppleColor?
3.Or what is your best suggestion for us to play RED's native colors?

Or should i export from CS4 to some uncompressed then import FCP and Color?

can you help???
 
This is a good question. I want the same thing. CC in REDCine and edit in Premiere CS4. There really should be a way to export EDL:s from REDCine if there isn't any. And import EDL:s from Premiere. That would make life so easy not having to export any QT:s or Tif-sequences and such. Just make one final export from Premiere.
 
Well, if you like to use Color, I understand that, and I guess your best bet would be to edit a sequence or an uncompressed QT master from Premiere, but...

I would NEVER trade Redcine for Premiere! Redcine is fun to play with and it can do an acceptable first pass color correction but Premiere can do a MUCH better job. First, Premiere, or any other program, cannot output R3D, so once you leave Redcine you can never go back to it. Then again, Premiere does all of its color processing at 32 bits and most of its filters are 16bits, so why not color correct in Premiere? That's what I do all the time, especially if the result is intended for DVD, web, TV or even Blu-Ray. If you need more quality or options, then of course you could go to After Effects and use Color Finesse, which is awesome, or even better, buy Magic Bullet Looks for $400 and you'll have an AWESOME color corrector that works only in 32 bit and has tons of presets and filters for anything you can think of. If you're only using Premiere to edit because you can cut the R3Ds very easily and don't want to spend any more money into an Adobe solution, I understand, but I would never choose Redcine over Premiere to correct, even the simple color correction tools in Premiere are far better than Redcine...

I would not be fairly qualified to answer as I don't have any experience in Color. I know it is a great program, I just don't work in Apple, plain and simple. But I am somewhat experienced in color correction in general and will tell you that 90% of all color correction can be done in ANY program as long as it provides suitable bit depth to keep the video sources in as high a quality as possible. With that in mind, AE is a simple but great tool, and if you take Color Finesse, then your options expand greatly. I know Color's toolset is bigger and more sophisticated that Color Finesse, and above all, it "looks" more sophisticated, but again, unless you're looking to do very complex secondaries with multiple trackings across moving scenes, then AE or CF will do very well. I've done a lot of R3D correction inside Color Finesse and it works fast and predictably, which is most of what I ask for...
 
ähm. maybe a silly answer but: Why not color correct in Premiere? You can change the same setting as in redcine. you can change, iso, gamma, curves, whatever.
 
We're doing preliminary color correction to our RED raw footage as soon as we import it into our project. You can do this by adjusting the Source Settings. You can even save presets and apply them to other clips. Later we'll do more color correction, but this is a great way to get close to what you want, right from the start. Make sure you've installed the latest Adobe Update for REDCODE.
