Hey, I just got the greatest idea!

How about since arun, Bobble, and Victor Dupuis say the video shown with a lower res than 4K would hurt their view of the red, how about they just not watch it for their own sake. ???

Hehe! Nice one ...

Joseph, how much do you think people must vote before this is presented? 200, 300?

this thread seems fairly irrelevant. :/

I contacted Jim via Batphone. He said he consulted with Peter Jackson and that the tally needs to hit 3,000,000. At which point you'll be able to purchase the short at select Borders Books locations on sd dvd for a small fee, provided you give the clerk a specified secret handshake...

They've already explained why they're not releasing it and those reasons haven't changed. I'm sure we'll get to see it eventually, but what does a 300 person petition prove? Do you think they're not sure whether 300 people actually want to see it?

I'm sry, i'm sounding like an asshole, by all means, continue to ask. I would also very much like to DL a copy. It's just that the logic behind this thread escapes me.

BTW, I voted for the first option

Thanks for you're opinion Brandon. I agree with you but ...

I've never heard them directly saying it. What do they say then? What are the reasons?

i'll try to dig up a quote, but basically there are 2 reasons:

First, Peter Jackson has the rights and it's up to him, not RED about who sees it or how it's distributed. And there's something about music rights.

Secondly, it was shot with ALPHA prototype cameras, which (i hear) were not nearly as capable as the cameras out today. Even now there are a lot of people bashing RED by looking at web compressed footage, footage incorrectly processed, or just poorly shot. The last thing RED wants is people to say "Well this was a high budget super short helmed and crewed by Jackson and Co.! This should really tell the tale!" and then seeing something shot SUPER quick, literally 'over a weekend', with a unbelievably tight post schedule, and again, using ALPHA stage prototype cameras.

I'm sure we'll get to see the short eventually, but I frankly completely understand why RED might want to hold back for the time being until skepticism goes down and awareness goes up. Until then, I don't really see what they have to gain, but can see what they have to lose.

EDIT: this is all hear-say BTW, please anyone correct me if I'm wrong

I agree and understand RED's position about the compression and all the skepticism stuff. I never knew about Jackson holding the rights.

But what I found abit disappointing was the fact that way back in April 2007 when they released the 30second clip, RED kept telling that they won't be able YET to post the full short DUE to download limitations ... as far as I'm concerned they never mentioned the things of rights and criticism. So I guess it wasn't fair leaving some of us hoping someday something will happen when it didn't.

After seeing the short on TV it really isn't as good as we've hyped it up to be on Reduser.
I do believe it has been hyped up but I haven't seen it so I can't judge it as of yet.

That is not the point...we just want to see it.
Absolutely. And also, when Brandon mentioned about web compression and it being criticized, don't you think that when it was shown on TV (seen in Standard Definition) it wasn't criticized. The step on showing it not in the proper 4K format has already been taken.
