Crop from 4K 2:1 to 1920x1080 2:35

I'm trying to take a 4K 2:1 image to 1920x1080 ProRes file with a 2:35 crop and a tc burn. The burn seems to work but when I add the crop all I get is a black frame with the burn. In framing control I'm picking Fit Width, Center Crop, Origin X 0, Origin Y 0, Width 4096, Height 1734 (according to my calculations a 2:35 aspect ratio). My Source Resolution is set at 4096x2048 (the default). I've experimented with checking and unchecking the lock aspect ratio box. Am I doing this right? Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem with whenever something gets cropped. Its incrediblly frustrating! If I add a crop and export MXF files, the crop is not in effect and the full picture is there. Anyone know what to do?

I know it wont help your problem, but this is exactly why most people shoot 4KHD when going to 1080P deliverable because the math is perfect and their is no cropping required.

Thanks for your quick reply Tim. You're right, of course, it would be better for me if the crew I'm working with shot in a format I didn't have to crop. Unfortunately, I'm not the one making that call, but I'll pass along that info to my dp. Still need to figure out the crop if I can.

I would suggest that it may be preferable to transcode without cropping, and just 'fit width'. That way you can re-rack during editing if required.

Thanks Nick, that's essentially what I'm doing. Still... since there is a crop feature in the program, I'd like to be able to use it. Has anyone had any luck with cropping?

I was able to take a 4K 2:1 file down to 1080p with the following settings:

Fit Height
No Crop
Lock Aspect Ratio Checked and set to 16:9

My export options were set to 1920x1080 ProResHQ

You might try those options and just change your aspect ratio and your export settings to match your 2:35 framing

I am currently shooting 4.5k WS and cropping to a 2.40 using RCX, and transcoding 1920x1080. You only have to remove roughly 26 pixels from the top/bottom. I don't have the project in front of me, so I can't give the exact dimensions, but that is essentially what I did, and it works perfect.
