How hard have people found it to get critical focus with the 5" Touch? Have read one RU say it's quite hard.
Would appreciate hearing some more of people experience's in this regard so I can evaluate how quickly I may need to prioritise an EVF.

Thanks everyone

Do you think the use of EVF makes it easier in handling focus? Some people at the forum think it's image is a bit too small.
I have the 5.0 Touch on my shortlist, but are considering the SmallHD DP6.
Any real life experience is very welcome.

I don't want to hijack the thread but I would choose the TVLogic over the DP6. PM me for more info.

I'm curious too. But I really want to play around with the touch focusing and all that jazz to see if it's worth it. I already have a DP6 so I will compare when I get everything. Good part about RED stuff is that it holds value very well and sells fast. If I feel I can get by with just my DP6 I won't really lose much money on the Touch.

Personally, isnt the real question........ Can you pull focus successfully using this setup ? I'm sceptical !

Doesn't the Scarlet have focus assist options? I have never had a problem pulling focus on any professional camera utilizing focus assist, and that includes our AF100 which has a pretty small/terrible screen.

Speaking above about either 1:1 zoom or focus in red, the evf detail / peaking tools are usually less useful.

The resolution on RED's Touch 5" LCD is only 640x480. So without using the 1:1 zoom, I would think that focusing would be pretty tricky. In comparison, SmallHD's DP6 is half the price, larger and has a resolution of 1280x800.

I'm still going to buy RED's Touch LCD because I like the touch-capability. But I just wish that the resolution was a little higher. A Touch 7" LCD wouldn't be so bad either... =)

Just to clarify, I've custom RED searched, read the Scarlet manual, but still a bit lacking, and sometimes there's just no substitute for some first hand field reviews, so would appreciate any from users who come this way.

This is the only specific user focus review I've turned up.

"1. Outside the 5.0 Touch LCD Red monitor was near impossible to see and so low of resolution that critical focus was very hard for bad eyes. If you can get a side handle, I would go with the DP6" (Note to DP6 buyers, thread goes onto say false colour is an issue with the DP^ and the TV logic Arnold referenced is a better choice - though of course it's still all just metadata)

But it has good focus features, (see below) and i've read of guys in the field who are only using the Touch. So it must be reasonably possible for "Good eyes" and a good sun hood...?

ZONES
Available options are CENTER and SPOT. Default is CENTER. This control allows selection of the boxes used to indicate objects in/out of focus.
This mode provides additional focus assistance to the photographer using RED, YELLOW, and GREEN color changes to the focus spot window. Inadequate subject illumination and/or contrast may interfere with normal Focus Confirm operation.

SPOT
Provides a small, square target for precise focus (similar to Center focus, only smaller). When objects located in the square are in focus, the square will be Yellow or Green. When objects located in the square are out of focus, the square will be Red.

Resizing
The spot focus square can be resized using the Navigational Wheel or the Touchscreen.
With the Touchscreen Tap two times on the square directly on the touchscreen to increase size. You can increase the size 3 times. After that, when you double-tap the spot focus square, it will decrease in size.

So possible/probable assessment for the RED Touch for focus pulling is it's great in good conditions... but bright sun, poor eyes, working at speed, low light, and you will benefit from a quality EVF or higher resolution LCD? Though I think the camera operational powers of the Touch are a very strong argument for the Touch coupled with an EVF. But ohhhh the $$$$ once again... :)))

Hope that's of some help. And still hoping some more users will chime in.

These types of questions are better served in the Epic forum as they've had their cameras for awhile. You'd likely get plenty of replies over there.
