This is a full colour management system that works with a selection of probes, including the Hubble, Klein K-10, and the EyeOne range.

How does your software compare to Cinespace? Is there a 30 day demo available? What other color grading software does LightSpace CMS supports?

I have to say (but then I would) this is a very powerful package, and compares very well with all other CMS offerings.

So with this software I can profile my monitor and obtain accurate colors for grading and for filmouts without buying a super expensive professional screen ?

Hi Mike,
The reality is that if the monitor has the necessary colour gamut and contrast you will be able to accurately manage it with this software and a good probe.

What you will know quickly is if a given monitor can be calibrated - the calibration interface will show this. If it can, the profiling option will then allow for accurate LUTs to be generated for the given monitor.

What no CMS system can do is make a poor monitor good...

I'm confused.
Is LightSpace CMS and 3D LUT demo, that I just downloaded, is the same thing?
Oh, I see, with Demo it is only possible to preview the 3D LUTs, but not to profile monitors. Is that correct?

Hi Jake,
Yep, that's correct - demo version is limited... It will show all functionality, but with a 'virtual' probe.

And LightSpace CMS is the latest development of LUTBuilder/Manager.

Thanks for the explanation.
But if the software decides that it cannot calibrate a particular monitor correctly can it then let's say calibrate it to 90% accuracy ? Is this desirable for let's say if your life does not totally depend on the colours that your monitor shows but you still want to have a pretty good idea of where you're at.
Can the upper end of the consumer screens be a good candidate for calibration or should I look up there into the stratosphere (Cinetal, eCinema etc.)
I also saw that these professional monitors come with their own probes and calibrate themselves automatically. Does this mean I would not need your software If I have such a monitor ?

LightSpace CMS will indeed do the best calibration it can, so yes is the answer to your first question.

Monitors such as Cine-tal will do their best to self calibrate, but you will need external software to check that calibration. And if matching to a different delivery format (film for example) you wll need to make a specific LUT to match the monitor to the final delivery format.

It is critical to first calibrate any display to a known standard (Rec709/P3/DCI etc, and then add a calibration LUT to match to the final delivery format, or to correct any self calibration (or calibration restriction issuse), or match one monitor accurately to another display.

LightSpace CMS can do all of this for you.

Couple of quick questions:

Do you plan to support more calibration probes or are the ones currently supported considered to be the only ones on the market accurate enough to be used in this environment?

Does REDCineX support colorsync and LUTs so as to make this all usefull for doing one lights on set?

Hi Quentin, we add more probes as required, but Hubble is presently the best price/performance...

LUTs are needed for display calibration and can be considered seperate to any grading system, even if the LUTs are held within the grading system. For Redcine-X I use a HDlink Pro for LUT handling.
