  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crimson Workflow is available for download.

Hi Ian,
I'm wrapping offline editorial on a feature shot on RED. I inherited the project from another editor, who had done an assembly using 1K proxies. As we approach finishing and delivery, what do you recommend as an optimal workflow for going from my offline FCP sequence with its 1K proxies to a full res 1080p24 sequence and EDL ready for a DaVinci session? I'd ask the coloring facility themselves, but none has been hired yet.

This is my first time cutting RED footage, so I apologize if this question is beneath your pay grade : )

=jon h.

Heh, I have no idea what my pay grade is...

I'd suggest exporting DPX files using the Frame, Color and Redline Tabs in Crimson. Each DPX file has a frame of timecode in the header that can be conformed from another EDL you generate directly from Final Cut.
I'd talk to the post house about exactly what structure they need the DPX files to be in. I can probably help you with that.

Happy New Year! As a new member, these threads have been amazing to read as the progression of Crimson has been extremely fast. If Only Apple could move this quickly.

Look forward to what is in store for 2009.

hey,
does 0.9.4S work with REDCINE 3.18?

I can't seem to open the Telecine XML generated in this version.

Cheers,

Hi Barkan,
No it doesn't....
but 0.9.45R "Rip Tide" does, download it here.

Note: Riptide is not downward compatible with old versions of Redcine so don't install it until you upgrade both.

ian. any news to report on the BIG release that mark was talking about a few months back??

still big. Still chewing.

All I can say is thank god for Norway and Finland. Some smart kids over there.

Some technical difficulties coming in on this Rip tide release... updating it now.

Ian, is it possible to use Crimson in such a way that I could...
-Make 1k standalone proxies, edit away
-Use Crimson to conform to FCP 'wrapped' R3Ds so that I can send to Color and get the full Red room inside of Color?

I absolutely need that Red room in color and am trying my first non-Crimson workflow via the L&T and it sucks, too slow and dodgey, I miss my old Crimson workflow

Yes I've had that idea for a while. I don't know of a way to do it right at this moment.

Seems like the Red room is still problematic. I myself have been converting everything to DPX in Crimson/Redline and opening it in color via an EDL straight from FCP. That is how I finished a project that went out to festivals last month. Worked wonderfully, though only 10bit I know.

Dang! I saw 'yes' and got excited.

Because I've got to do the FCP->Color->FCP workflow, the Red room is just a necessity.

Sorry to hijack a Crimson thread to talk about another app, but you can basically achieve this with Clipfinder and Colorfixer from Hans Daun.

It uses proxies, not L&T, so you don't need extra drive space. My manual workflow is described here, and Hans Daun's automated version of my hack here.

Ian, I hope you don't mind me linking to this here. I think Crimson and Clipfinder are both useful tools, and I use both.

Ian,

This is exactly what I am trying to do for my latest project, but am having a lot of trouble with the getting the DPX's linked up in color.

I can get the sequence fine, but cannot make an EDL from FCP that Color likes - Could you run me through the process?

Thanks,

Ross

Give me a little more detail on your workflow, framerates etc.

I shot 4K 2:1 at 24fps.

Use RedRushes to go to 720p Prores and edit.

Export XML to Crimson and Render to 2k REDLog DPX's.

Create XML to take back into Final Cut - Here I have a lot of problems linking up the DPX image sequences with the Final cut sequence (I'm new to Gluetools), and have only manages to do so by manually creating quicktime references with filenames to match the Crimson roundtrip EDL and manually relinking them. Add Effects/Comping etc.

Then Export an EDL for Color - But here I cannot get Color to relink to the DPX's..??

Any help Very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ross

Once you render out your DPX files there is no need to return to Final Cut with your DPX files. Take an EDL directly from FCP to Color and use it to conform the DPX files in Color.

Let me know how it goes.
