Okay, I'm doing everything by the book with Crimson and still having issues.

I have a 10 minute sequence from 24 different master clips. I have exported an XML doc, imported into Crimson, matched, created intermediaries...BUT, when I go to open the new _telecine file, it will not get beyond the root level. All I see when selecting "Open" is "Applications-Users-Library-Network-Volumes" and it will not go into those no matter what I do.

Can anyone shed some light on this. If it is a limitation, what ARE the limitations? File limitation of the MASTER files? Clip limitation?? Size limitation? (Due to 2 gig deal...if so, how can we possibly figure this out??)

Thanks for any help you can give. I have a message up for Ian on the Crimson forum, too.

Wow, this is frustrating. If it's as I think it is, it is pretty lame. I hope I'm wrong!

I just tried doing 3...yes just 3 clips that total about 10 seconds in my timeline and suddenly it works. I am starting to be afraid that RED Cine can only have 2 gigs worth of MASTER files in it's library at a time. Is this right?

This is not good for long form stuff. Each master file of ours is about a 30 minute interview. So, even though the edited clip is only :03 each, it doesn't seem to matter, as the master file is big.

Hopefully someone can chime in soon and tell me a work-around to get through this.

Thanks!

Kevin

Anyone? Also, what is up with all the green screens unless you render when you use the proxies.

I'm getting a little frustrated hearing about all the new stuff, when this stuff is not working. I'm using all the latest updates on OS & RED, on a brand new Intel Mac.

Thanks for any help...

Kevin

I just witnessed this problem at my customers.

I suggested to make the timeline in half then it worked.

He had about 60 clips in the timeline.

Green thing is happening because of codec/QT issue over multiple R3D footage (over 1 minute long at 4K). RED claims that build17 will fix this. You can use REDrush to output small size offline QTs instead of using proxies.

Thanks, Guys, but this doesn't even come close.

I started splitting my sequence in half, then quarter, than an 1/8...still the same problem. I finally got it working with about 3 clips. Yes, 3! So...that takes care of about :08 of my 10 minute long sequence. Sigh...this is frustrating.

I know about RED Rush, believe me. The point is to get this working like it should. We have about 15 hours worth of footage total which in RED Rush would take about 3 years to export. We have culled it down to 10 minutes and all I want to do is bring those clips only into RED Cine. This is a VERY typical, professional workflow. I am very disappointed it's not working.

Can someone from RED help here?

Thanks.

Kevin

IMHO REDCine is not faster than REDrushes – quite to the contrary, at least on my Mac Pro.

Uli, I'm not sure if you are responding in the wrong forum or what. This was not a conversation about what is faster.

The method I mentioned is currently the ONLY way I know of to NOT render ALL of your 4k files, but instead create a sequence first and only correct those clips.

Well if this is the situation I would try and consult Ian Bloom at crimsonworkflow.com
Mean while let me take a wild guess. Did you create the intermidiates in one directory? when you import the intermidiates do they open in one layer at the libary? if not change the depth setting in the libary to 10. and try again.

Have faith, I have just finished a conform to 2k dpx's of a feature film ( over 30 hours of matirial) with this workflow and it worked like charm.

Hmm...I did create the intermediates into one directory. I'm not sure why I wouldn't. The instructions said nothing about doing it differently.

Thanks for the tip. I will try doing the depth setting at 10, though I have a feeling that this more an issue with the file size limitation.

I do have a post up on Crimson's site, too.

Thanks a bunch for trying. I'll let you know if it works out, but I sure hope RED gets some of this stuff ironed out for post.

REDCINE cannot load more than about 100-120 "segments" at any time - this is the _001, _002, _003.R3D files so if your eights seconds of footage comes from several twenty-minute takes, then that's what you'll have to do.

This is why many people were clamoring for the ability to split R3D files down into segments.

You may have better luck rendering in REDLINE from Crimson.

Kevin,

I'm sorry I missed this thread.

My belief is that the limitation in Redcine is with the number of 2GB chunks it will load.

In your case dividing your sequence into sections will not help you. Because you have a 30 minute interview that is being multiplied per cut every time Crimson creates an intermediate.

You don't have many options. Since Redcine won't support multiple references to a single clip you can't turn off the intermediates in Crimson. You need to use Redline. I wish I had a better solution for you.

Wow, any word from RED on this? Anyone bothered to submit a REDCINE bug report?

Maybe my answer was too short last night, but I believe I was posting in the right thread!
Since we ran into similar problems with our very first Red project (long interviews too) I found out the hard way that REDCine is not up to the task. IMHO, RC is just a teaser to buy (or rent) Scratch, but not a serious tool.
So, we turned to RA/RR to do our first-lights and never looked back. The project was going to HDTV anway and was onlined in FCP/Color with ProRes.
If that's not appropriate for you, go REDline as suggested by Ian.
