The rules in this exercise of brainstorming:

1. Assume Jim has a full billion dollars laying around.

2. You cannot suggest using his money to benefit you directly.

3. It is allowed to take someone else's idea further.

4. Not limited to cameras... anything goes.

A new audio/record standard, where any external audio recorder/ secondary camera will all be triggered by a single record function and automatically link those files together.

Develop a new color-temperature accurate "cold" (bio-luminescent) lighting technology, that has the output of HMI's combined with the low power consumption of LED's.

I fully support Jim spending his money on enjoying the rest of his life! :). He's done enough for us already...

irrigate africa so they can grow crops...one of my professors told me if they just did some development there that it could generate more crops than americas bread basket

Biofuel and solar energy research maybe wind as well, developing a less intrusive and more efficient wind generator that can generate with very little wind or lots of wind, films need energy and coal needs to go.

He, he, we must be bored Elsie.

Here we go, spend his money on all the charitable things I want to do. (doesn't violate 2. as it is spent on other people).

Next one, give all of his money to his local genuine bapist church.

Blast, I thought it read "Fun" ways for Jim to spend his money. So I guess the following are out:

Personalised Hummer Moon Buggy.

Matching Hummer Space Shutter.

Invest in water condensation technology for density cropping (fruits, nuts etc).

Invest in weather modification for local and global cropping. There is huge financial benefits to be had from this.

(I declare I have technology proposals for these, but as I can't directly benefit here, he would figure it out).

development of high speed, lightweight Anamorphics. Think lightweight like Kowas, and fast like JDC.

A EPIC DRAGON 4x3 anamorphic only camera

The thing about billionaires - and especially the self-made types like Jim - is that they don't have a billions "just lying around" doing nothing. They have assets and investments...
If Jim indeed had a billion lying around that he doesn't need for anything - I would recommend him to buy another island (or extremely remote property) as far away as possible from people that are trying to tell him what to do with his money - and this time make sure nobody knows what or where it is...

Much better question and a productive thread would be "Where should RED focus their operational profits". While I am sure they have their plans for that, I am also sure they will not mind to hear from us where we would like to see RED go in the future...

Just my two yen that I do have lying around my desk and not sure what to invest it in...

Since Jim likes glass so much, perhaps he should buy Corning?

Yeah Peter, he could sell up everything :). I know a chip company I would like to finance, but even if I was rich, unless I have the petty cash, I'm probably not going to. Too easy to burn lots of money on even one project.

It's a hypothetical question to provoke thought. I think Elsie chose the title to get the viewers attention but I highly doubt it was literal.

Don't mean to sound harsh, but it's my personal feeling that this thread is in questionable taste and doesn't really belong here.

I am with Mike on this one. While I do believe Elsie had the best intentions - the choice of thread title (especially capitalising the "JIM'S MONEY" part) is really coming across in the worst possible way...
As I have said above - I am all for creative discussions, but lets leave Jim (or any other particular person / company) in peace. God knows he has earned that much...

Topic title does seem a little crass.

But to answer the question = With a billion dollars one could fix then replace everyones RedMote.
