Hello,

I'm not a DIT... but I've been trying to do my own creative lut to use within the IPP2 pipeline in the camera (Monstro) using Redcine-X.

What I get exporting through the menu "IPP2 LUT Creator" is no color correction applied but an over contrasted picture when I load the 3Dlut in the camera.


So...

What are the settings that the 3D lut will able to use from Redcine-X ? (Only curves? CDL?...)
Do we need to bypass the IPP2 Output transform in the: Image:Primary menu of RCX?
Or is it in the IPP2 LUT creator we should use (RWG/log3G10?) not to embed the IPP2 to rec 709 transform at this stage?
Sometimes the naming is getting weird when loading the SSD to the camera it gets like "*Apple macOS UDF" naming, why that?

I've not seen any step by step tutorial or TECH video about doing a creative lut with RC-X or Davinci for IPP2 workflow.

Hi Patrick,

I would recommend creating your Creative LUT in Resolve.

Essentially all you need to do is first export a IPP2 LUT from the REDCINE-X Creator like you did before. Select the settings you usually find yourself using in-camera, like say Rec.709, Medium Tone-Map and Soft Highlight Roll-off. Ultimately this won't really matter as the Creative LUT you end up exporting won't have this transform built in - but rather you are using this to see your "starting point".

With that LUT exported, bring it into the appropriate Resolve LUT folder, and start up Resolve.

Bring in a good R3D sample clip - and make sure it is setup for REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10.

Then apply the freshly generated IPP2 LUT to a node in the clip's node tree.

From here, make some new nodes BEFORE this LUT in the node tree. It is very important that the IPP2 LUT is the very last node in the chain.

Once you've done your adjustments on the previous nodes, simply disable or delete the last node that contains the LUT. Once that is disabled, export the node tree as a LUT in Resolve.

Now you can load this LUT into your camera, and it will work with whatever Output Tone Mapping or Highlight Roll-Off you select in-camera.

Regarding the odd naming issue you are describing. Make sure you format the MINI-MAG in-camera. Then when you mount it onto the computer, create a folder at the root directory called "luts". Do not format that mag using Disk Utility or any other software.

So the procedure to export the IPP2 Lut from RCX is to get a camera emulation transform lut? Is it the same as applying a OFX RED transfrom lut from Resolve?
The naming problem is perhaps due to the formatting of the SSD. I've used a SSD that had some rushes on it. Now I reformatted it and it recognise the file name.

The OFX Color Space Transform is not the same as our LUT and therefore the camera's transform.

You used to be able to have a Color Managed Workflow in Resolve 16 that could reproduce the same image as our LUT path, which includes some very clever gamut mapping, but it appears that has been removed from Resolve 17.

Would recommend going the RCX LUT Route to make sure you are matching exactly what will come out of camera.

Sorry I take that back, you can replicate our exact output transforms (with proper gamut mapping) in Resolve 17. Still not through OFX, but through a Color Management timeline. there is just a heck of a lot more buttons you need to click to get there than in 16. Here is a screenshot of how you could set it up to essentially allow you to not have to create a LUT in RCX.
