to start, an editor that is cutting this project has asked for DV25 clips to use as their offline, anamorphic. i could use some help on this one. here is what i did, in a step-by-step summary:

1. transcode .r3d files in red rushes to 640 X 480 with stretch set (editor wanted DV25 anamorphic files to edit with). transcoded into QT, DNxHD 36.
2. load these transcoded QT's into metacheater.
3. in settings window, set to 23.98 and hd 1080. did nothing on the main page in the lower right corner (24 to 30, etc. area). saved this ALE.
4. open media composer. set project to 1080p 23.98. load ALE into bin.
***5. switch project format back to NTSC 23.98.
6. batch import all clips in bin from ALE at DV25 codec.
7. AVID now makes MXF media. this is useable by media composer and when i play the clips, the timecode display above where the clips play is in a 23.98 timebase, and matches the .r3d files' timecodes in REDCine.

so...have i done something wrong? will the EDL that is exported by the editor's AVID after the cut is done work properly when loaded into the colorist's suite? is there a better, more rock solid step-by-step that you could give me to get the editor DV25 clips to cut with that WILL work downstream during conform??

If anyone has done this successfully a simple, yet detailed, step-by-step for getting to DV25 MXF files using RED tools and AVID would be appreciated.....for me it absolutely essential that the conform (happening 3 weeks after the edit is done) works.

thanks....

try CMD-D on the start column as michael suggests and choose TC24.

When you make your EDL choose TC24 as "Source" TC

When you read your EDL back in make sure to Decompose the sequence in the bin and all the ".new" clips will have the properly tracked TC.

will call you tomorrow to go over it again.

i don't think you need to re-import but we can check that tmw. may be able to just send new bins to editor.

before doing the 'command-d' trick i have gone and exported both a 'red16' edl and a 'cmx3600' edl from AVID edl manager.

i can successfully import the cmx3600 edl into apple color and get the proper source red files on my timeline, in 2K. Which is super sweet by the way. I like that.

i could NOT get the clips on my Apple Color timeline when importing the RED16 EDL however. Anyone know why?

also, when i stay within AVID media composer and click the left arrow to put the edl back into the editor, i cannot get this to work. i try and decompose the new sequence that it sends back to media composer and this leaves me with the four clips in my test edit listed in that bin with .new after their name. i try to relink these clips and it will not relink. hmmmm. one note is that the 'start' timecode of the .new clips (at least one of them anyways) is one frame earlier than the start timecode in the EDL itself.

I am getting lots of help from Jason, but figured I would keep this thread updated in case others are benefiting from these discoveries.....

one final note, when i open up the edl in text editor it seems to display the proper clip names and timecodes as per my edit. Both the RED16 (which did not work in Color) and the CMX3600 one (which did work in Color) seem to display proper timecodes in the text view of the EDL file......

would i then be safe to assume that my EDL (at least the CMX3600 one) is working properly and can then rest assured that when the editor spits out their EDL and the color facility loads it in, they will also be able to successfully conform back to the .r3ds?

If your EDL's look good and match your burn-ins, then you are good to go. Color doesn't support the 16 character source EDL.

MetaFuze does not support SD workflows yet. It's on the list of things to do for upcoming releases.
