  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crazy Noise!

It must be me in davinci? I Start bringing down the lift and turning up the gain.

This footage will be delivered in 1080 for Nat Geo
 
im importing XML's from FCP so I'm grading r3d's. exporting Pro Res 4444

Also, the native iso on the scarlet is 800 but I found less noise in 250 than 800 that's why I keep it there. So are you saying I should just keep it native? I just hate noise.

No not every scene, but at the start of each day, or if the weather is consisted, every few days outdoors. It just keeps things nice and clean. Also set your standby fan to whatever your recording speed is (but not less than 40% as it will get too hot), let it warm up, for about 20 min, then execute the BB. The EPIC/Scarlet are Digital Cine cameras, not Video cameras so you need to do these things. IT takes time and is inconvenient, but its part of the 4K RAW game. :)

2k Will exaggerate noise. This camera definitely needs a black balance. I can see static patterns in the grain. It is also under exposed by about 1 1/4 stops. Shooting at 320, make sure nothing clips, and expose as far as you can to the right of the histogram, then redevelop it @ 250 in RCX, and you will get whistle clean footage even in 2K.

quick question... If underexposed shots get noise then why have I seen no noise in shoots shot with scarlets where the DP lit very dark for dramatic looks? The Hobbit for example... I know was shot on epic but in any case they shot very dark scenes with hair lights and soft boxes and most of the image was black but ZERO noise. I've seen shorts done like this too. How do they do it?

Expose for the right and bring levels down in post.
 
Alex you underexposed your footage a lot. When you trying to compensate in post than you gaining the noise too. That is the main problem.
Your r3d file was shot using 500 ISO setting. To make it look good enough I need to gain the ISO almost to 1280 or even 2000. Thats a lot!
When I see your footage in initial state - ISO 500 it looks pretty fine and clear!
Are you using slow lens?

You have amaizing footage btw.

1. When you shoot 2k you crop into the sensor, which will make noise much more noticeable.
2. You need to black shade while you are in your shooting environment. And you need to have the sensor warm up to the same temperature as you calibrated to before you start shooting
3. The image looks a little underexposed to begin with and it looks like you tried bringing up the exposure in Resolve, this will add even more noise.

I get the cleanest images when I expose the image while I'm RAW exposure mode. And use the histogram / highlight warning
 
Black shading isn't as important as everyone is telling you. You're fine.

You probably didn't have DaVinci set to do a full debayer on the footage. It's set to 1/2 by default. 1/2 debayer on 2k that is underexposed = noise.

Great thanks for your help. I was using a slow lens on that shot it was 300mm 5.6 and it was getting dark. That was the brightest I wanted to go with out jacking up the ISO. but you are saying to do this? Thanks for the Comment. Selling to Nat Geo. If anyone wants a link to the finished footage, it'll be up tonight and I can give you a link for stock purposes.
