Interviewing Dennis Hopper's lawyer for a sad case..
Hopper is gravely ill w/ Cancer :angelsad2: and his kids are making him
divorce his wife of 14 years so they keep all his money and the wife none.

So some little guy snatches the camera while it's rolling and it continues
to roll..and roll...and roll. Believe me once Scarlet gets out there any
camera..bag..or case w/ Red, Scarlet, Pink, or Burgandy on it will be
a target for these criminals.

Red Day out of towners: Hang on to your cameras..very tightly..

:smash: Judge says...7 years for property theft...case closed :smash:

Wow. Broad daylight, in front of dozens of people. You gotta' be really desperate to try a stunt like that.

As for the footage... Looks like something out off the next Jason Bourne film. :)

Would be kind of funny to watch someone try and do that with a RED One. I don't think they would make it very far. Epic and Scarlet of course would be a little easier to do a snatch and grab on. We just need a way to equip the new cameras with a high electric charge that can be operated remotely. You could trigger it from the REDmote or your iPhone.

Or you could just pack heat!

Well shooting people in the back as they are running away will get you in all kinds of problems. A firearm is suppose to be used to protect yourself or another from death or serious bodily harm. Of course if you are wrestling with the guy for your camera a gun might work but at that close of a range he might try and grab that next. You can still protect yourself and your property but as I believe it it has to be before they have grabbed it and ran away. There are rules of engagement for these type of scenarios.

Also different states have different rules on this. As I've heard it you can shoot someone, in Texas, for breaking into your car and a couple other instances that involve personal property. I don't have any sympathy for criminals that prey on other people.

The best thing to do is just be situationally aware of what is going on around you and who is around you. Usually when someone like this snatch and grab guy see you eyeballing him they stay away. The other idea would be to have some kind of retention device connected to your camera so that if someone did try and take the camera like this guy did they would have to bring you along for the ride. Seems like the best way to deal with these type of criminals. Just make sure you have a plan if they do grab your camera and pull you down to the ground.

Not to mention even a lowlife asshole doesn't deserve possibly getting the death sentence over $20k in stolen goods.

Well as the saying goes...play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

This crew is from a no/budget gossip show not a news show..so they
must use some sort of prosumer mini-dv that's worth more like $2K than $20K.

Consider if this same lowlife had a gun and approached you on the street
the fact is that it is YOU who might be the one getting the death sentence over $20K..$2K..$200 or even $20

Why it is important to alert the police in these situations...
because even if you got your camera back..you never know what
this character is capable of or who he will approach tomorrow
or the next day. These characters need to be off the streets.

Personally think the footage was completely staged as the guy manages to perfectly photograph his entire run and drop the camera in such a way as we see him run off at the end. And he bumped into another camera man from TMZ- who made him drop the camera? Doubting all that bigtime. It is hilarious footage though...

Yes..that was my first reaction as well...right up untill the cameraman's
voice and reaction as he calls 911...cause if it was staged he should get
an Academy Award best supporting actor nomination.

I thought TMZ had switched over to using a lot of VDSLRs. For some reason I remember hearing that somewhere, so they could snap paparazzi photos, and then turn it over for video.

Hi Noah,

I agree--100-percent staged. Great publicity move, though.

Hi everyone, I'm the broadcast engineer for TMZ TV and the footage you saw was not staged. The punk ran up on one of our paps and attempted to jack the camera.. One of our live-stream guys was nearby and proceeded to chase the crook down....which caused the kid to drop the camera. Oh, we use Z1U's in the field.

I joined the forum recently because we are looking to equip our paps with R1's.........ok maybe not.:tongue_smilie:

I really joined the forum due to the great info available. Looking to pick up a R1 in the not too distant future.

So there you go!

Alex..thanks for the info. But I am afraid some people still won't believe.
Could have something to do with this being TMZ...hmmm...maybe.
When you get your Red keep an eye on it and hold it tight...But
don't keep us in suspense...did they wind up catching this guy..

One theory is this punk was hired by a celebrity TMZ:furious3:hater:dita: in
a futile attempt to reduce TMZ's videocamera inventory. Only question is which one ?

Steve, as far as I know, the wannabe crook got away. But hey, we got a pretty "funny" piece out of it and no one got hurt.
