  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crazy Epic Artifacting

Hi Teague,

We're looking at this issue with our engineering team. Please email me (rob at red.com) directly so I can follow up with you.

Thanks,

I just sent Rob an email and links to these new R3D'S but I wanted to post them here as well. This time per Matthew's suggestion I shot at iso320 and 3:1 compression. (still f-11/5600K/24mm) The file ending in U8 was side lit and has virtually no clipping. The clip ending in ZH is back lit so I allowed the sky to clip. The image is GREATLY improved from the 6:1 compression/iso 800, but I am still seeing very noticeable blocking in the sweatshirt (used same sweatshirt for comparison). Again these artifacts were very easy to create on my first try. Plus the settings were ideal and not always doable in the real world. (obviously with slower motion you need to increase compression/ depending on lighting may not be able to shoot 320iso, etc.) It seems like RED is addressing this issue. I really appreciate how pro-active they are and I trust we will see improvements ASAP. I will keep everyone posted on this thread.

Hi guys, I had what looks exactly like this same issue on a camera test shoot a few weeks ago. Scene was deep depth of field, backlit dense forest.

RC was the highest available on HDRX at 5K (can't remember exactly what that is? Something like 6:1?)

Scene looked good except for a foreground treetrunk that was in shadow, was extremely blocky.

I just reviewed some high speed test footage I shot yesterday at 3K 13:1 and it has extremely bad artifacting in the shadow details (unusable). Playback was with a Red Rocket card - not sure it would have been noticed on the LCD. I haven't yet looked at the other files on this thread but the situation sounds similar - blight backlit sun with foliage, tree trunks and other high details in the shadows. At one point even had what looked like aliasing on a persons arm. I just emailed Rob at Red.

Rob,

I emailed you as well. I am seeing the same artifacting, although mine is manifesting itself in a classic noise behavior and movement.
