  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Crank 2: High Voltage and why its being shot with Canon's HF10 and XH A1

You're joking, right?

OK. I see now that you are indeed not joking :umm:

The question on my mind is WHY

Is the XH A1 an interlaced 1080?
I couldn't find anything on Canon's website showing specifications as to wether the camera was Progressive or Interlaced, and I'm not about to comment on the HF10.

I just don't get it, I guess.

Why?

The Crank guys must know what they're doing...

The made some serious coin from Crank "one".

Being Redusers, I hope they will care to comment on this thread.

The made some serious coin from Crank "one". . . . .

Absolutely no doubt about that what-so-ever.

After reading the article I get the point.

I wouldn't want to be trashing and destroying my REDs at the end of a shoot for any reason.

Can't wait to see it when it comes out

When you see Jason Statham in a film, you know its gunna be crap. You should use actors instead!

I thought Redone was going to be the messiah for budget film (it would still have to be the best option:shifty: )
but as soon as scarlet / epic hit the market its going to send the "Red Movement" + the whole industry into overdrive:gun:.

Anyway,
WHY COMPROMISE QUALITY?! esp when you have an option not to with Red , WHAT IS THIS ABOUT AFTER ALL.... it makes you wonder doesn't it? .... i did enjoy Crank though it was a pretty cool flick

I wonder if they are using those cameras for the whole film. But it just goes to show that even 1080 has enough detail to compete with 35mm film. Those films are usually so over-processed in post that you may not see any difference in the final film.

And let's not forget what many wise filmmakers have said, "it's the story that makes a great film, not the camera".

They'll be able to put these cameras literally anywhere (e.g. body rigs) and do shots you wouldn't ordinarily be able to do (I'd imagine they'll be all over Scarlet for Crank 3!)

The XH-A1 and HF10 are both capable of 24p.

According to Canons Website http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=175&modelid=14061

"The XH A1 captures true 1080 High Definition resolution video at 60i, 30F or 24F frame rates"

Doesn't 24F, as stated on the Canon website mean that it's an interlaced Camera?

If so, it's capable of doing 24F, not 24p.
Technically, there is a difference, no?

EDIT: Oh, never mind. Canon answered the question for me on their website
"These Frame modes have the same look as progressive frame rates, but are not labeled "progressive" because they are created with an interlaced chip. . . "

Interlaced is inherently evil

The key quote is they plan to destroy "loads of them" during the shoot. How many scarlet owners would rather see a "stunt Canon" do that?

here is a sample of Canon A1 progressive HDV 24p, the setting has some gain on it as it was backstage during a fashion show, i love the camera, best bang for around 3K until scarlet imho

That's a pretty nice frame grab.

HD cameras cameras have really opened up the option a lot for feature films. You'd never have been able to intercut a DV with 35mm, but a good (and well used) HD handycam can be quite convincingly intercut with 35mm in a 2K DI situation in the right circumstances (and I think an ADHD action film is probably that circumstance).

Of course, for the price, Scarlet will be the next evolution of that concept - practically disposable with a reasonable budget, and small enough to go anywhere. It will be interesting to see where they end up.

I wonder, if a RED camera (Scarlet, RED One or EPIC) were to suffer a fatal impact while recording, would the image recorded up until that point be recoverable (assuming the CF card survived without being physically destroyed). So, does the file need to be properly closed when recording?
