  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

CP.2 Glass on Epic with Ruby for the wide end... Thoughts?

I know the Ruby is rehoused nikon glass and I'm just wondering if it will match the sharpness and quality of the CP.2s. Will this be a legit set for rental, or do I really need to pick up the full range of CP.2s?

I'll take the Ruby over any lens in that range regardless of price or manufacture.

I love the Ruby.

Wow,

Just when I thought I had this figured out. A lot of good thoughts and perspectives here.

Sounds like some pretty solid endorsements of the Ruby too.

Thanks a bunch.

I was part of the SALT test and we tried out CP1's and the prototype RUBY. The Ruby is very nice lens. It also might be worth it to take a look at the Duclos 11-16 ? Covers full frame from 14mm onwards and not very expensive. I don't think the CP2's are in much demand on the fickle rental market...at least that seems to be true in LA.

Good Luck.

...and the Nikon had the same resolution on the edges as the MP and surpassed it on the center of the image.
It is not as sharp as an Ultra prime...

Only one of these posts can be right...but which one? I haven't tested it against any cine lenses myself.

Yikes to the above. Way off bud...There's no distortion like the above claims.

If you didn't see extreme barrel distortion you weren't testing it on a full frame sensor.

Julio, Thanks for the tip. We are financing though, so I don't think used is an option.

On the Ruby, it seems like there may be some confusion on the term distortion. It definitely has the "Terry Gilliam" look on the wide end. No doubt about it.

So, I think we are finally coming to a conclusion on our purchase. Pretty much settled on CP.2's, but won't be picking up the 18. Just the 21, 28, 35, 50, 85.

I think the Ruby will need to be a future wishlist purchase cause it's breaking the bank.

I should mention that we are also picking up a 3 set of Canon L zooms @ 2.8 for run n' gun on an upcoming doc. (16-24, 35-70, 70-200)

While Cps may not rent much in LA, in dirt-poor New Mexico they've been the single most asked for lens at my shop this year. On the high end, it's all ulta primes and cookes, but these are out of our price range so we sub them.

Hold the presses... May sub the 21 for the Duclos 11-16. About the same price and it looks like a nice conversion.

I am with you Dave. I have been waiting for weeks for Duclos to catch up on thier back orders. These lenses are very popular.

I was having the same dilemma until i ended up on a shoot with the Cp2s. I hated having to light to the slowest lens when most of the production was shot at a T2. I just bought a set of RPPs and would suggest the same.
