  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Couple of EPIC questions...

...and if either of them have already been answered elsewhere I apologise!

1. EPIC rear modules interface. It's a very modular camera by design. It's possible to attach multiple rear modules to enable different functionalities. What is REDs policy on publishing the details of the interface used to attach these modules? Will they be encouraging, neutral, or discouraging towards 3rd parties seeking to make EPIC-compatible modules? I don't know if this has ever been clarified one way or another.

2. EPIC storage. The RED-supplied SSDs will be perfect for many, but not all, applications; for some jobs they may offer insufficient capacity, or an uneconomic price/capacity ratio. Have RED discussed, or is anyone else working on, a solution that might address that? A means of tethering an EPIC to a computer, or attaching an external autonomous RAID box, for instance? It seems to me that, even without developing a whole rear module, it should be possible to implement something with a 'dummy' SSD module which inserts into the SSD slot and cables up to an external device.

These are very thoughtful and interesting questions, Mike! I will be very interested to hear the discussion about these topics.

Its been known for a fact that they are handing out plans for 3rd parties to make rear modules, which I'll go ahead and assume will have to be close friends of red, and be tested by red.

One of those it ET, they were showing off the 3D sync module they are building at NAB this year. Not sure if its functional yet.

I hope other 3rd parties are Sound Devices and Ambient for audio and timecode/genlock!!

Clearly I didn't spend enough time at the ET booth! Thanks Zac. So 3rd party modules will be in play. Excellent.

Next is my storage question. Given the current tight supply situation with SSD, I'm surprised some enterprising individual hasn't come up with an SSD slot adapter allowing other storage devices to be hooked-up.

I agree with you on the storage thing ... I know that just like CF cards, the supposed speeds of SSD drives out there are not always accurate. Thus the need for Red to have their own developed. But given the Epic and Scarlet's immense popularity once supply problems are solved, I can't imagine it not being at least a little profitable for a 3rd party module and drives.

Timecode (input only) and Genlock is already available on the brain itself via pin 3 and 4 of the sync port:-) if it's implemented yet i've no idea, just gathered info from the Epic Manual:-P
