  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could we have a redray laser projector sub forum please.

I think Jeremy has a great model there. I would be interested in knowing which sorts of films perform best in that scenario -- I'm guessing the more family oriented or kids films would do best. That is the group that tends to not leave the reservations as much, or not for the purposes of luxuries or entertainment.

Small presentation venues, boutique theatres, etc.. these are areas where the RED projector concept would not only thrive, but would need to exist to make many of these upcoming business models truly feasible. The current crop of available projectors out there just can't get it done. They either price themselves out of consideration (Barco, Christie, Sony Cinema) or they are targeted to high-end home theatre and not suitable to the task due to poor durability, poor lifespan on the lamp systems with expensive replacements, need for active 3D glasses which makes it expensive and downright impossible to show 3D to any sizable group.

I have a business plan myself and for all the reasons listed above, plus a dozen more, there's no way to pull it off [yet]. I'm so fed up with the current cineplex model and I just see massive inefficiency, wasted resources and a relentless fleecing of the movie-going customer as a means to compensate. The model is dead and the industry can't see the forest for the trees. But the model can't evolve or be reconfigured until several factors change. One of those key factors is projector technology and the pricing that goes along with it.

right there with you both...

btw, anyone tried a 4-projector array?
i'm still a minute out from when i absolutely need something super big/bright...
major concern would be maintaining brightness levels. might have to develop some custom tools :/
alternatively, 2 wuxga projectors w/ overlap/blending optimized for 2.4:1

however, that would give you 'improved' resolution AND brightness... because your projectors would have to all be closer to the screen.
and that right there makes me want to try it. also considering short-throw rear-projection, for brightness/presentation purposes.
really wish red had kept the interchangeable lens concept. and i still want batter power...

This thing is going to blow up. Just talked to Hollywood Reporter who's doing a piece.

The movies for the opening weekend are: Divergent, Lego Movie, Enemy, Draft Day, 12 Years A Slave, and Path Of Souls.

There will be a change to the lineup the following Easter weekend but that's TBD. Like exhibitors we will evaluate what works box office-wise, and adjust. I know comedies are particularly good, so we could end up with Bad Words getting into the rotation. Who knows, maybe people will want to see Draft Day because of what Costner did for our community with Dances With Wolves!

The other thing is we will roll this out anywhere. If there's a community -Indian or not- and they want us (kinda like tugg.com) then we will go there.

I am also with you on the concept Jeremy, we have been looking into community style theatre for a while now, just waiting for the right technology at the right price to hit the market. That said, I don't think you will ever see a Red Ray projector that will give you the kind of lumens you are looking for which will project on 30ft+ wide screens for anywhere near $10,000.00. You may approach that at 2.5 or 3 times the price if Red is still working on it that is.

RED had announced two different projectors. The REDRAY projector for smaller venues, high-end home theaters, coloring rooms, etc.. $10K price tag, fixed lens… Then there was the big guy, the Crimson, no announced price tag, interchangeable lenses, made for cinema use and larger venues. It seemed they both used the same tech and both could scale to larger screens and brighter lumens based on the laser engine(s) used to power them and they were expandable/ extendable. I think the big difference between the two was the lens system and the intended REDRAY licensing. Now that it's been two years since they've said anything, this could have all changed.

I was at RED Studios about 16 months ago and they had the REDRAY projector there on Stage 4 with their other projector collection. Did not see it run or do anything. We only screened stuff all the kids shot for Camp RED and that was done on the Sony 4K. Once again, much could have changed since then.

I was at Red Studios last summer and everything screened was on the Sony...yet there were at least two projectors sitting under glass, along with more than a dozen RedRays sitting around. I asked Ted if I could just put one under my arm when I left and he grinned.

At that point he told me Red Projector was at least six months, if at all. There was no mention of EOL...and clearly there are some of us who would very much like to see it become a reality.

Could it be that the R&D never ended and simply put on the back burner while they got Dragon implemented and shipping? It would be a real blow if Red walked away from RedRay and Red Projector...they're essential to getting others to drink the Kool Aid. But it has to be at a price point affordable for them, and for us.

I was told the new Barco 4K laser projector has a price tag of $345,000!!! They're not going to sell many of those at that price point.

The back burner was the original and somewhat vague statement, but that was 2 years ago...

That's the big cinema version and that's actually a good bit cheaper than the 4K Christie! Barco already has their "small" 4K non-laser projector that has a list price around $55K, but I've been quoted a lot less. IMO, I think the Sony 1100ES is just as good and can be had for half the price.

Personally, I plan to go with the Sony 600ES (can get them for right at or just under $10K if you shop around), 4K, full HDMI 2.0, etc.. Only thing that will change that is if Projection Designs shows up with their rumored 4K projector, RED shows up with theirs or Barco brings a 4K entry into that price segment. Then I'll have to make a decision and at this point it almost comes down to who can get it to me first. Sony is available… If RED can't deliver until later this year or early next year, I'll still get the Sony and order the RED. Or I'll happily take the RED and be a beta tester. …as long as I have a good way to calibrate and monitor its output.

Jeff, what model number is the small Barco 4K projector?

Care to share Dealer info so I can get a quote?

thanks!

I think Jeff's referring to the 23B. But if memory serves it was $72,000 and included the Doremi server and lens.

To Jeff's comment about beta testing for Red, I would absolutely love to guinea pig that too!

nice, jeremy (:

can you comment at all on the specifics of what tech you're using?
do you want to talk to the ebci? always happy to host ya (:

I have made several pleas on many levels -even emails to Jarred- to let him know how fundamental something like Red Projector is to our new business model (no we're not going to stop producing features and docs). This is a new, complementary business, and a means to an end.

The company is called Bandwidth Digital Releasing Ltd. (bandwidthmovies.com) and we're literally taking the 4K experience, on a 35 ft. wide screen with surround sound and concessions, and showing the latest Hollywood releases -as well as select indie releases- to reservations across North America at the same time they're available in theatres in the larger urban centers. We're a network of mobile pop-up theaters that are up in 2 hours at the local gymnasium or arena.

Adam Beach is a founding partner and he will be on hand to help promote.

We go live April 11th. Our films are Divergent, Enemy, Draft Day, 12 Years A Slave, Lego Movie and Path Of Souls. All are shown on DCP.

Yes "Slave" is already out on Bluray but we selected the film because of the subject matter...it's such a powerful film and our communities have endured racism, assimilation, and slavery since those big wooden boats came across the water. Anyway, not to politicize anything...we're doing this on a massive scale. Starting out small but will be expanding exponentially on a very smart timeline.

And this is where we thought Red Projector could come in. 4K at $10,000 per unit plus lens is way more affordable compared to anything else that's out there. We need minimum 15,000 lumens because we also do 3D, and will have audiences of 500 or more in the bigger communities (and will have a wider screen for those). All the 4K projectors out there are 5x the price at a minimum, and it sucks...we could have much wider penetration faster at a lower price point because the hard costs for each mobile pop up unit is significant. But the business model shows each will make money on its own, and do so fairly quickly.

Yeah, sounds great Jeremy. Over here it can be a long way (maybe 500miles) to a cinema, so something once in a while on a local council invite should be popular. Something like a 3D laser projector, surround sound might be something they can't get, but with 3D on silver screen you get restricted narrow seating.

However, concerning surround sound. A long time ago I wrote to Logitech about a sound equalising scheme for their upcoming speaker. Equator horn reference monitors use the same idea and will auto adjust for the acoustics and shape of a room, going up to 18 inch and in a 8.2 configuration. Used in professional production and worth checking out.

I think the theater Redray was going g to start in the $20k's and you add more light modules to it for more output.

Yes, me as well!

We're using QSC speakers and subs. Self-powered with XLR feeds.

To control what's happening in a gymnasium we've got velour drapes hanging from 50 feet of pipe on either side and at the back. This helps give it a more intimate feel and has some sound absorption.

Using Barco projector and Doremi server.

Using Shopify for our ticketing and concessions so it's all wireless. We have trailers running on a loop to our lobby display with speakers. Advertisers and sponsors have vinyl banners as you'd see at any trade show.

It's a very cool set up.

As I said in the article we're not re-creating the wheel, but we are trying to innovate. The key is to have operating costs low enough to justify all the travel, HR, and equipment costs. We're hoping/expecting people are going to respond in numbers so we can show how profitable the model can be when you factor gate receipts, advertising revenue, and concession revenue.

Eventually we'll have multiple units in each province and state operating.

We're looking for some good people in each territory/state as we branch out. Given who we are and what we're trying to do, we definitely want to work with any Native people we can.

Yes, these are remarkable speakers but I doubt they would do 500 people audiences well enough. I found that 18 inch was the largest not 15 and 8.2 system not 10.2.

I was at NAB today.
I can only assume that the big screen presentation was playing from a RedRay. I did not ask.
There was a RedRay player in a display cabinet. I assume that this means the player is still alive, otherwise they would not be showing it at all.

I directly asked the question about Red Projector in the Recon forum (heading 2014 Redray released) and didn't get a reply. My guess is they haven't made a decision, or if they have, they're not saying until it's time to release it. Either way, doesn't help me right now.

Did anyone see Red Projector in their booth?
