  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Could we have a redray laser projector sub forum please.

Hmm, yes.

About, odemax release. People watch absolute rubbish encoded footage on cable and internet happily. Ode ax might be apprehensive about how to market this, but I'll show how.

First you talk about how Redray is superior and gives you detail and contrast and resolution, and how the projector maximises these with more beautiful color, then you simply show them split screen examples, and clip switch cut examples, where you say this is how much contrast you normally get and this is how much you get with Redray, you zoom in or split screen or cut to to show the detail. Color is different, most people dong have TVs that can see it. So you tell them that, but to illustrate you are going to turn down the color and show them what difference it makes, by now you already turned down the color a few sentences ago, now you turn up the color purity to show the approximate difference to an good average tv (probably close to 100% color now). The viewers minds should already be starting to compensate for the dull colors getting used to them and turning up saturation, then the full color should appear extra colorful briefly (a little psychological trick). There are enough techniques there to spread over 3 or 4 different ads through the year. Another trick I wish manufacturers would do is split mirrored screens for details. so you can see the difference of matching parts of the image in the middle of the screen. It I'd too difficult to track back and forwards yo see detail differences in demos. There you go a million dollar ad consultancy job, but I'm not going to get paid for it as usual?

Hmm, just realised this is not the Redray now shipping thread, but I'm sure Hatred will get to see it.

So...nothing more regarding Red Projector?

It kills me to have to drop $37,000 on a 2K projector when I know there are Red Projectors under glass at Red Studios.

Alive, or dead? Jarred?

Probably still simmering in the RED R&D facilities. RED just has to get the right level of cost/performance in the product to have it be successful and that requires suitable parts from Asia. A 10000 dollar 4K/2K laser projector suitable for digital cinema installations will annihilate anything that any of the projector companies can offer with lasers because they cannot and will not go down to that price level as they can't make profit there while RED can due to lower costs.

It is confusing, but the personal projector was to be less than $10k, the cinema version over $20k or something, and upwards.

Just read about Christie premiering a new 4K laser projector at CinemaCon:

Experience the first-ever demonstration of 6-primary laser projection technology. Christie extends the boundaries of 3D cinema with dramatically increased 3D light levels at 14 foot lamberts combined with Dolby 3D® advanced color separation technology. Seats are limited so we recommend that you pre-register for a demonstration time-slot.

Can't go wrong with Epson.

This is killing me.... Gonna have to buy a projector of some sort in the next 3 to 4 weeks. It looks like it won't be a 4K projector since there's only one on the market that fits my needs and interests, that I can actually buy. I'm just not feeling the love for the Sony 1000ES or the slightly lower spec'd 500ES 4K models. Much better color rendition and pricing on the latest 1080p models. I'm debating between the new Epson 6030UB and the new 2.5K model from Projection Design. It's a temporary fix... The screen will have to be as well, since we don't know what we'll need there yet for the RED projector. Oh well, screens are cheap until I need to preserve polarity, I guess I order new fabric when the time comes...

Or I just suck it up, forget about buying some other toys on my list and get the Barco 4K installed and then live with it for the next 8 years or so. Not a happy thought.

Can't go wrong with Epson.

Have had the Epson 6030UB here since mid-November. For the price it is absolutely awesome and just an all-around nice 1080p projector. Fan noise is a bit much at times, but I knew that was one fault vs. the Panasonic going into it. Panasonic didn't release a new 1080p projector last year and they're still pushing the PT-AE8000 -- which my brother has and I'm quite familiar with. Also nice, but the Epson is a bit newer and has the edge for image quality. But these are not what I ultimately need or want. Absolutely need to have UHD resolution+ now and the Epson is getting replaced with a Sony VPL-VW600ES 4K projector in about 3 weeks unless RED can deliver their projector soon -- as in guaranty that I have it installed by July~August. I'm also considering Barco, but not sure I can swing the price when I'll need to ROI this thing in 18 months or so. The tech is advancing too fast to be stuck trying to pay off equipment over multiple years.

I'm hoping RED shows the projector again at NAB and actually has solid delivery info. I realize that is a huge thing to ask and probably unlikely.

Jeff, I am on your same boat. We might end up with a Barco DP2k-10sx or 8sx. Depends on pricing. I know its not UHD but I rather have a nice accurate image and DCI complaint stuff than the extra res.

Of course, its about 40K for such projector. I would LOVE for something like that from RED but its been years now from the last info on the crimson...

Not unreasonable at all Jeff. After all this time some release info is needed.

There will likely be reasonable sets to buy soon. The Mitsubishi LaserVue LCD for one. and others with low powered LCD 90% transmissive and good color backlights, or Samsung amoled. Bright, wide color gamut and good contrast with low black point is what I prefer. If Red wants us to wait a long time I'm gone, and 80% of the sales they could have had three years ago. Projector sales generally are in the toilet compared to LCD due to high pricing and poor screen technology use.

I could probably make a 4k LCD laser projector this year for less than $1000, just got to dig out the old diy LCD projector forum notes.

I read somewhere part of the problem with laser rollout was getting the FCC compliance to change how they classify it, so while technically it would be a laser, it would be considered a different emitting device...and that's finally in process. I seem to recall that being one of the challenges Red admitted to, but if it was THE reason then I would have hoped they could have informed us of such as they tend to do about other updates such as Dragon and so on.

While I'd love to proclaim it alive and well I have no info to the contrary -maybe we wait a week and Jarred & co will surprise us.

Frank -I feel your pain. We're probably going with a Barco 15C which has quite a bit more light output than the 10SX -in large part due to the fact there aren't many features being released in 4K, and when we show 3D movies it will require that extra lumens. Furthermore, I've been told unless your screen size is over 50 feet wide there's no discernible advantage from a viewing perspective between 2K and 4K. I'm not sure I believe it but that's what the Barco folks keep telling me...sure they'd love to sell me a 4K-23B or what have you, but from an ROI perspective it doesn't make sense.

What's interesting is all these Barco units can ingest 2K and 4K, but I have no idea whether their down convert within the unit makes a better image than a standard 2K DCP.

Wayne if you could get 15,000 lumens in 4K or greater for less than 10,000 and a decent power supply, we would buy several!

Thanks.

Years ago I was looking at making a laser projector product, and contacted the laser FAQ moderator to ask about safety concerns, stating the potential of energy spikes on a scanned beam and the inherent energy in the monochromatic light, being peak stimulation frequency, he dismissed my concerns. However this is the same thing the safety research latter turned up. I've got designs to get around this. Just shows what happens when you think about things. Don't just trust what light show guys say, talked with a few, and they just trust what company product marketing says and their limited experience, like with some camera guys out there, they are not really engineers.

I was thinking of starting a thread on the mystery of why the laser had not come, and do some research to determine if it was a scanning laser and if that was why. People seem to think it was a local company in CA involved. I have a solution for the scanning lumen restriction too, separate from the previously mentioned. But the reality is others are doing laser theatre projectors, and if you have to lower the power, just give us the home/studio version 3 years ago please.

Not really as simple as they said about the 50 ft screen. Resolution is based on density of resolution which is governed by viewing angle and eyesight, not screen size. that's simplistic (though for certain applications there are standards where good seating is). As long as you can comfortably focus and fill your inner peripheral vision (or outer or inner central vision for old and sick people) you don't need a 50 foot screen, otherwise 4k TV would not work over 2k etc.

I'm sure they still want to sell lots of 2k product.

Jeremy, I'm taking about home made projectors, low brightness projectors. You could simply align four 3750 lumen 2k projectors and balance them. I think I posted a link to cheap high spec projectors before. But the super saturation of a laser projector gives you extra color advantage in a mildly washed out environments (which might not affect you so much as I assume you are using a higher gain silver screen for 3d).

I believe that for our 16 foot wide screen the light output of the dp2k-10sx will be more than enough. I hope... ;)

Speckle wasn't an issue on what was shown of the RED projector. I think it was too early for them to show it and they faced some harsh criticisms over some of the issues. It was only operating at 2K at the time, they never got the software update to boost to 4K before the show floor closed. The color rendition was superb, even a bit too punchy in spots -- definitely a very large gamut to work with and the blacks were rich and detailed. The 3D was blurry and muddy and we saw halos on text or fine details or any high contrast edges. But that was apparently caused by the screen and glasses not being matched to their polarization. Jim stood in front of everyone that day and said it was an early prototype and there are problems. But too many people still can't accept that and they were looking to find any fault they could. They will show us all again what the projector has become if, when it is ready.

I'm really hoping RED has continued with the projector project and that it will be shown at NAB. I don't know how else we can stress to them that they are sitting on something a lot of us really want. Some of us really need this to happen.

I have made several pleas on many levels -even emails to Jarred- to let him know how fundamental something like Red Projector is to our new business model (no we're not going to stop producing features and docs). This is a new, complementary business, and a means to an end.

The company is called Bandwidth Digital Releasing Ltd. (bandwidthmovies.com) and we're literally taking the 4K experience, on a 35 ft. wide screen with surround sound and concessions, and showing the latest Hollywood releases -as well as select indie releases- to reservations across North America at the same time they're available in theatres in the larger urban centers. We're a network of mobile pop-up theaters that are up in 2 hours at the local gymnasium or arena.

Adam Beach is a founding partner and he will be on hand to help promote.

We go live April 11th. Our films are Divergent, Enemy, Draft Day, 12 Years A Slave, Lego Movie and Path Of Souls. All are shown on DCP.

Yes "Slave" is already out on Bluray but we selected the film because of the subject matter...it's such a powerful film and our communities have endured racism, assimilation, and slavery since those big wooden boats came across the water. Anyway, not to politicize anything...we're doing this on a massive scale. Starting out small but will be expanding exponentially on a very smart timeline.

And this is where we thought Red Projector could come in. 4K at $10,000 per unit plus lens is way more affordable compared to anything else that's out there. We need minimum 15,000 lumens because we also do 3D, and will have audiences of 500 or more in the bigger communities (and will have a wider screen for those). All the 4K projectors out there are 5x the price at a minimum, and it sucks...we could have much wider penetration faster at a lower price point because the hard costs for each mobile pop up unit is significant. But the business model shows each will make money on its own, and do so fairly quickly.
