...What would be even better is if we actually had a REDRAY LASER PROJECTOR to discuss in that sub forum.

We could move all the old laser projector threads there and talk about it there. This place is getting swamped with the codec stuff.

Would be great if we could gain some traction on this...we're still fans and want to see Red Projector happen. It's too good not to.
 
Red was schedule to have a booth at the recent Cedia expo - but did not attend, I would take that to mean the projector is still pretty far off.
 
This is killing me.... Gonna have to buy a projector of some sort in the next 3 to 4 weeks. It looks like it won't be a 4K projector since there's only one on the market that fits my needs and interests, that I can actually buy. I'm just not feeling the love for the Sony 1000ES or the slightly lower spec'd 500ES 4K models. Much better color rendition and pricing on the latest 1080p models. I'm debating between the new Epson 6030UB and the new 2.5K model from Projection Design. It's a temporary fix... The screen will have to be as well, since we don't know what we'll need there yet for the RED projector. Oh well, screens are cheap until I need to preserve polarity, I guess I order new fabric when the time comes...

Or I just suck it up, forget about buying some other toys on my list and get the Barco 4K installed and then live with it for the next 8 years or so. Not a happy thought.

I wish that RED Projector would be here also. Have you considered other laser or hybrid led/laser projectors? Granted they are in 1080P and not 4k.
 
I need a 8k projector, and there has been an 8kx8k planetarium one for years now. But Red is lossing traction, because the places that want 4k are getting it and the places that want digital are getting it and getting tied in. If Red had been more open in it's distribution network and had a projector here two years ago, I could have driven around the country to every little cinema signing a good portion up. If they get a 2k projector and a distribution deal from somebody else, they are not going to really want to change to another. That might be 400 in this country and tens of thousands+ world wide not including theater chains. The major distributor here owns the major chain, independents are relatively low on the pecking order, they actually Need Redray. So many independents are gone, and most I know are in areas that big chains can't service, or don't service. So delay could cost 50k+ of theater projectors world wide just to independents. It also brings into question satellite distribution.
 
It would be really useful if we could have an update on Red Projector.

We have incorporated a new business, have received core funding, and created a business plan to take 4K projection to the masses. We are investing heavily in a new distribution platform and it's exciting.

But the current projector players are really expensive out of the gate. Sony appears to be the least expensive for the R515 at $50,000. Then Christie, and Barco. I have no idea what the NEC costs but assume it's up there with 33,000 lumens. And let me preface by saying we need a minimum 10,000 lumens, and more likely 15,000, especially when we will have 3D to project as well as more of it becomes available.

The fact we will need more than a dozen units by the end of 2014 (and quite possibly sooner) means the upfront costs are pretty substantial. The numbers on our financial projections make sense (and look very attractive too), but to have to pay out 100K for full mobile theatre set up (with server, screen, trusses, 5.1/7.1 audio system, projector, and lenses) is a big nut. Obviously the profitability goes up if we can find a way to reduce the hard costs up front per unit.

I have appealed directly to Red several times, but there has been no response at all aside from, "sorry we have no timeframe." This is unfortunate since we're now seeing 4K TV's becoming incredibly affordable, but again accessing 4K content is difficult. Odemax simply doesn't respond either when I email them...after all we have a feature that's now playing on Super Channel in Canada, and DirecTV in the new year -both pay TV windows are only 1080P.

I ordered RedRay when it was first put online and still haven't received mine...I know Dragon is huge and I look forward to getting our upgrades. However, when people are able to see 4K it will really, truly change things for the better and accelerate the market shift as we;re seeing on the TV's, gaming consoles and computer displays.

All of this dovetails into this Projector question...when we screened our trailer in 4K at Red Studios and watched the Red demo reel in 4K everyone in the room erupted into applause. There's no denying the viewing experience. The projector answer is a major component contributing to it.
 
Laser projectors from other companies might be launching next year depending on how the approval process is going. I know all the big names have them 80-90% ready to launch give or take further tweaks or humps in the approval process from government regulators.
 
They could at least give a projector sub forum with the old threads.

It is getting too late to make a big dent, all over the world people are now using projectors to project images and animations on public structures and buildings and with the mapping ideas I wanted to be first to use.. But crimson has taken years too long, and even the consumer markets will see heaps of 4k projectors. What I predicted seems to coming true :( . The only real way to compete in a consumer market like that us to license your projector to a consumer manufacturer. Maybe this is the cause if the delay?


A suggestion though, Laser Art/animation is going to be big, include a high end arm with android to do this and the frame hold features of recent interface standard (I forget which, but where a frame can be output through the interface and continually projected until a new frame us issued, allowing a computer extra time to generate a new frame, even a little one for presentations).

That's a huge amount of projectors. Our need could eventually reach that amount by 2015 but for now we'd love to get our hands on a dozen or so.

The cheapest of the projectors I mentioned was the Sony R515 at $50,000, not including the 3D module, but does include the server.

What's so frustrating is we saw two of them just sitting at Red Studios 6 months ago. They've got a design, a working prototype, but what's holding them back? Granted Dragon is now moving out the door in a bit of a trickle, but once that pipeline has matured from a company product perspective one has to believe Red Projector is the next big release.
 
Not a whole lot of info coming from anywhere on this… The whole REDRAY and laser projector thing seems to be at a stand-still. I'm one of the lucky few with a REDRAY player and there's not a whole lot I can do with it, other than watch some of my own stuff on it or share a few things amongst the few other REDRAY owners. The REDRAY player was to be built into the projector, so that may have something to do with the hold-up.

Can't tell what's going on with ODEMAX either. Have not talked to anyone there in months… Web site is still there, but everything else seems dead silent. ODEMAX seems to be the only one who has the REDRAY SDK tools from RED. Not even sure how one goes about getting onboard that ship. Nor would I know what any current motivation would be to do so since players seem to be in limbo and are already in need of an HDMI 2.0 upgrade, among other things. The price hike from $1450 to $1750 didn't help them, although I don't think anyone who ordered at the higher price received one.

I've heard murmurs that Christie and some of their offshoot license-holding entities have pretty much cornered the market on laser projection through their patents. Don't know how much of that is just industry FUD or whatnot, but I've noticed that everyone's laser projection systems seem to be on hold at the moment as well. I wonder whatever happened to all the Mitsubishi patents from about 10~12 years ago for laser projection? Do they still hold them? license them out? Someone acquire them?
