Heck, that might just work for prosumer video cameras too. My only worry would be how to quickly get mounted on a tripod with that connector on the bottom.

just an odd questions, why is it in the picture the guy is carrying two cams? surely one is enough!

Check the FAQs page, #14 at the bottom, shows you how to keep the camera setup for tripod use without delay. Seems like a good solution, provided your tripod is QR...
