I went to buy a red 16gb cf card today only to find the cheapest shipping option to Australia was going to cost me $122, that’s almost half the cost of the card. Does red offer any other solutions here?

I've found it best to group purchases together. That $122.38 seems top be a standard international charge for items under a certain weight. If you know you'll be needing some bigger items in the near future wait until that order before getting the CF Card and the shipping will still be $122.38 unless your order is extremely heavy or includes hard-to-ship items like RED Bricks (which are charged differently because they fall under the Class-9 Dangerous Goods category).

Did you try emailing your sales rep (if you have one) to see if they could use another method? I know that USPS has flat rate boxes that cost $12 and arrive in about a week to Australia (I've sent them before), but I'm not sure if RED is set up to ship USPS. I know that their (USPS) tracking and order number setup is not always conducive to the way some business have their software setup to run the shipping department, but it'd be worth a try.

That's normal shipping fees, i paid the same price as well.

But if RED can offer cheaper shipping alternatives. That will be great

When I asked a while back about shipping just a T shirt out here they replied with a ~$70 Fedex option, I don't believe they will ship anything but Fedex though.

this makes things very expensive for us downunder.

Yes, FedEx is our primary carrier. Emyr is right, if you can get more product per shipment, you get more bang for your buck.

Remember, if we add a lot of additional carriers, we add levels of complexity in logistics. Which, in turn, means more overhead. For us to offer product at the price we do, we do have to be streamlined. This is not to say that are not always looking for better and cheaper options on carriers, we do.

Forgive my ignorance of the US Postal system, but wouldn't the postman come to your location every day anyway?

Certainly someone would have to type in an address on a website other than Fedex's, but it really seems for a lot of reasons that an inexpensive, universally accepted method such as the postal service should be offered as an alternative for those with a good reason.

Streamlined doesn't have to mean inflexible. I feel it is important to strike a balance between streamlining and customer focus.

...for example, when I receive a US shipment from Fedex, they could charge me anywhere from $0 to $150 in 'brokerage fees' on top of whatever taxes and duties are required.

Using the good ol' post office, I know that the charges will always be whatever the exact taxes are, plus a $5 handling fee.

I have a small business called US2NZ. I buy American Product on behalf of Kiwis in NZ and mail the product to them. My site is here: LINK That price seems insane to me for the CF card. I ship whole Laptops to NZ for about the same price. A CF card should go standard with insurance, I am thinking $15.00 US?

If your interested, email / pm me and I will see what I can do for you.

Cheers M8.

Brent, for what it is worth - yes, if a customer requests to ship via USPS, we accommodate. We generally send sticker only or tee shirt only orders this way. Granted, we lose a lot of trackability this way so we prefer not to ship more expensive items, like CF cards. It is pretty tough to tell a customer "Sorry, your CF card was lost in the mail".

Note that I said FedEx was our "primary" carrier. Do not confuse that with "only" or a lack of flexibility.

I can certainly understand why RED prefers to ship via FedEx. The trackability is a major issue when shipping stuff that is expensive. A lot of things get lost in the mail - especially around Christmas time :-( But it's nice that you guys are flexible and will ship whatever way the customers want - as long as they know the risk involved.
