So here’s a little camera test I did with my new Scarlet-W. My friend Meisha is a talented CosPlay artist and I had some old footage of her from over a year ago shot on my Sony FS7, which are the Princess Mononoke / Blue color shots with all the flowers. I just cut it together with some new stuff I shot on the S-W, Meisha working in her studio and the pink outfit with the LED twirly sticks, to make a semi-coherent little piece.

Most tests on S-W have been daytime type stuff, so I wanted to throw around some light. For the S-W footage, I just adjusted the levels and added saturation with no color shifts. I wanted to see what the natural color of the S-W were and natural skin tones of the S-W without color alteration. I dig the S-W skin tones.

Used a mix of Tungsten with some extra CTO kick and a 5600K Kino for the blue. The first two S-W shots I gelled both light sources blue just to see what it looks like. Shot using Zeiss ZFs and all on a jib for subtle camera moves. 50fps @ 5K rated around 320 to 400.

Also, the old FS7 footage was badly under exposed because I shot it when I just got the FS7 and was clueless as to how to properly expose, so the image is a bit thin. Definitely, not representative of what you can get out of the FS7 as it’s capable of very nice images when exposed properly (which I did not do).

I’m very happy with the S-W. Just DP’d some spots for Disney last week and everyone loved the footage. S-W is great. Long live Red! I’m a fan.

Excellent Gene the first shot is awesome (y) Love it

Nice work, Gene.
Yes, you can spot the FS7 easily next to the SW. If I may, in your estimation, how many stops under exposed were the shots from your Sony?

Hi Brandon,

I would say I underexposed the FS7 by at least 2 stops.

Like I said, I had just got the FS7 a few days prior to shooting and did not understand how to expose using Exposure Index so I screwed it up. Being so under exposed makes grading the image very hard as there's just not much info to push around. "Thin Negative."

I totally understand.
It's difficult to pick up a new beast and know how to ride it right away. So to speak. Trust me, we've all been there.

HA! I was going to say it sounds like a thin negative. There was a girl in my photography lab in college that kept over exposing. She was hot so it took me until she was on her third roll of Kodak Tmax 400 to tell her a quick fix is to shorten the development time in the film can. We're married now.

Now that is a great love story!
