Glad to see this little writeup about the Epic from a "DSLR Guru" ... including some rumors I never heard about:

NAB Cameras Pt. 1

Vince is a great guy, very generous sharing info and teaching. Cool to see him so high on the Epic.

It appears as though it is pretty much the camera that anyone who is serious about this craft wants in their hands.

This might have helped he he.

I'm not in 100% agreement with his wrap up. Re the F3, he sees no downsides, and says it is a lot cheaper than an EPIC...
but by the time the Cinedeck Extreme is added to get the 4:4:4, the F3 is most of the cost, more bulky, and heavier than the EPIC.

Nice photo Ketch! Keep spreading the Gospel ;) I'm joking but I agree Milan, especially coming from a photographer where everyone understands how horrible it is to work with jpegs vs. raw files...

I heard a rumor today that NFL films purchased 150 of them… does that mean the end of film for NFL films? 150 is a lot of cameras if this rumor is true…

Interesting...

If NFL Films purchased that many Epics, they will be shooting along with Panasonic 3100s which will be used for everything that is typically shot in HD right now such as interviews, game related stuff, and non-football coverage. Here's the press release.

If this rumor is true about the Epics, then it may be an indication that they are ready to move on from film. This would be a very symbolic move if it's the case.

Agreed. There's certainly some inconsistencies in his logic. That and by the time you add an external recorder and PAY for the S-log upgrade to get the most out of the camera, we're actually approaching $20k for the camera... before media, before lenses, and the "value" is starting to fade. Of course, it's all opinion, so salt grains are advised.

By the way, is it just me that have a really big problem with having to pay $3000 to enable the SOFTWARE that makes the camera do what it's physically capable of and is supposed to do anyway? I don't dispute that the images look good, but there's something conceptually wrong with that in my mind.

Yah, I think the one thing about Vincent is that he has friends or affiliations with a lot of the different companies (primarily Canon), so I think he has to be overly diplomatic sometimes (though he really bashed the AF100 pretty harshly, that was a surprise) ...

I believe one of the reasons they shot film was so they could do it at 120fps...so it makes sense why Epic would fit the bill for them.

I wonder how long it will take, till some script kid hacks that F3 into S-Log .
