  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cooke Super Speeds!!!

I don't like the gold colour. it looks a bit 80's retro.

30mm rear diameter is on all cooke's so every owner and rental house would be in trouble with 5k right?

those are the new cooke s4's designed to glow in the dark. Not the Pancros. The pacros go to 2.8 and are priced around 20,000.00usd.

i just checked the Arri ultras and masters seems like they cover s35 dia as well. I'm a little confused how big is 5k bigger than s35? If it is you have to through all cine lenses oout and work with med. format still lenses. The arri 765 uses hassalblads this is what will problably more than likely happen if that's the case.

Damn Matthew you got me thinking there.

Is it the Leitz 90mm f/4 Elmar with 16 blades?

Please let me know which lens that is, it's killing me :)

looking for newer glass....those zeiss compact primes are interesting to me...although the T3.6 for the 18mm is a little scary.....I am debating....they are at Abel being evaluated....and I must admit, I miss them a bit!

I can't wait to see what those K-35s look like on a Full Frame Epic. That's what I'm holding out for... That and the lush look they produce.

Hey malc84 -- need to switch over to your real name, go see the Real Names thread in the Recon section.

As for Mysterium-X 5K, yes it is larger than S35, but not by much. Many S35 lenses will cover, especially the longer focal lengths. Also keep in mind that S35 is similar in size to APS-C format for stills cameras. Full frame 35 lenses will more than cover 5K, no need to go to medium format glass. The RED Pro Primes cover, the Master Primes cover, upcoming glass from UniqueOptics and the Rebel primes will cover, IB/E primes will, the Zeiss Compact Primes will actually cover FF35 as they share much of the same optical design of the ZF 35mm SLR lenses. The Angeniuex Rouge DP zooms will coveer 5K... Really there's lots of options, you get the point. Like the gold detailing of the new Cooke 5's, the 30mm image circle is a bit retro. :) I'm still eager to see them though. I'm intrigued by the illuminated focus ring, but do wonder about its accuracy if it's recessed under a clear piece of plastic. Almost seems more like a cool little gimmick rather than a real feature.

The S4's list a 30mm imaging circle on the website but I am willing to bet they will cover the aspects you want to use on the Epic. In truth, I don't think you can rule these out for S35 Epic/Scarlet use until someone either tries them, or Mathew gets his hands on them and gives us a useable imaging diameter across the range.

Even if the illuminated focus distances are a gimmick (and in truth I can't imagine changing my focal marks, in the dark, with a tape measure) these lenses are T/1.4 that's an extra stop of light. The other thing that needs testing is just how good these lenses are wide open.

If they aren't bad, the worst that can happen is the S4's come down in price as who will buy those at the same price when the 5/i's are as good with a stop more light.

Call me old fashioned but I quite like the detailing on these, just wish I had the money!

Roll on October 2009 when they are supposed to ship.

This is cooke we are talking about here, of coarse they will be spot on wide open and sure they will cover with an image circle similar to the S4's, they know what is going on in the market, weren't they the first company to release a set of glass with the RED name attached?, if i had the money i would buy a set today. They are the dream lenses, S4's with an extra stop has been every cinematographers dream since the release of S4's, slowly but surely i see Zeiss masters ceasing to be gods they are....especially for digital acquisition.:emote_rainshower:

Dont know if Master primes are "gods" when it comes to digital shooting... People here, as I mentioned, truly like the "soft" look of Cooke combined with the "sharper" look of digital.... One thing is certain when shooting RED, when its out of focus it really out of focus... very noticeable.

And just for reference, according to Steven Hilder's incredibly good post from a while back: http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=411234 30mm would be absolutely fine for everything apart from 5K 2:1 which would require about 31mm (which these lenses will probably cover anyway.

So worst case, you spend $120K on 18/25/32/50/75/100 and you have to shoot at 5K 2.4:1 or 16:9 (and frankly only the 18mm has any real chance of being below 31mm). I think I could live with that, now where did I leave that $120K...

But I know nothing so please don't make any purchases on my say so.
