Someone's offering me a cooke 20-100 at what seems like a good price. I've never shot 35mm or film before and know almost nothing about PL lenses. Anyone have any experience with this lens?

I've got one. Its huge and heavy. It's the ancestor of the currrently build 18-100. You can consider it as the oldest of the "new" generation zooms.

In its time it was a lttle revolution, hardly breathing, hardly any CA, etc... In its wide part is does have notciable distortion, nothing for a precise pack shot for instance.

It's more on the slower side. T3.1 is the wide open T stop. Its does ramp, so you want T4 when you will zoom the entire range. Shot T4 its sharp with a very nice focus roll-off. Also it's very kind to skin.

All over a bargain when you find a decent collimated sharp one. They have been a workhorse for the last 30 years... Often people sell them because they are worn out. Let a experienced lens tech check it.

A year ago even good ones were cheap, say 2.5-3.5 k. With RED the game changed and now they are considerably more expensive.

I would never pay more than $4K for a 20-100 and it better be in really good shape for that $4K. I've seen decent ones sell for $2K. Of course, with this artificial demand for 35mm glass right now, all bets are off. A few months ago, $8500 would've bought a newer 18-100 in good condition. But all these dealers are really milking the market lately.

IMO, if it's in the $3K and under range and is in good condition, preferably a full clean and service from a shop like Duclos included in that cost, then it may be an OK buy if you need something to hold you over until RED releases that 18-85. From what we've seen of the 18-85, it looks very nice. I think most who saw it at NAB would agree.

no, this was a friend of a friend from San Jose who's slowly getting rid of all his cine glass. Although the price isn't much better than that. what does "OP" mean?

have RED announce a price fore the 18-85?

overpriced I think

BTW, this lens is really good, it resolves more than the Red is capable of recording, and the pictures from it are great looking.

once the 18-85 comes out... those retarded inflated prices for old zooms will dip dramatically.

Hi,

Also true for ordinary glass such as Zeiss Standards & Super Speeds.

If RED can deliver the prime lenses in great quantity, and the 18-85 readily available, prices of cine glass is going to drop dramatically. Its SOOOOOOOOOOO expensive right now. Some Zeiss lens sets were 12 grand 8 months ago, and are now 20+... K maybe a little exaggeration, but really, my point is that 35mm glass is getting expensive and I would hold out on buying the Cooke 20-100 unless its in good shape and under 2500 dollars.

So if you could get a second hand set of Zeiss primes or a new set of RED primes, and both were $20k, would you still go RED? Are they THAT good?

I don't know. There haven't been any tests with the prime lenses that I know about and I have only used the 18-85; it was very nice, but having another option for lenses is going to lower the price of glass.

Hi,

-If- the quality of the new red lens offering will be of the very high quality, as reported so far by those who saw and used it first hand, then red might also become the market leader for 35mm cine glass, after already being the marketleader for 35mm cinecams.

And lets make no mistake, marketleader in revenue -and- units.

I think Standards and Supers will come back down a bit but I feel the days of $10,000 PL mount lens sets are over for good. There are just too many cameras and even if the Red lenses are primo quality (No pun intended... Ok maybe just a little) there are still going to be many DP's that want something different, more classic or softer. I'll definitely buy a set of Red primes but there's no way I'm selling my Standards or Cooke 25-250. They're just too pretty.
