  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cooke 20-100 VS Red 18-85mm T2.9 ZOOM

The Red 18-85 is a bargain if it meets the advertised quality and specs everyone presumes. A comparable lens from Angenieux and Cook costs the fourfold.

The old Cooke 20-100 is a great lens, about 1 kilo heavier than the Red 18-85 with some "features" that are common with zoom lenses: It does ramp, meaning if wide open the picture gets darker the more you zoom, secondly it has on he wide-end noticable barrel distortion. But - the 3 dimensional feeling is someting very special and only the later Cooke 18-100 has the same feel. Even a 50+K 24-290 Optimo does not come close in this regard, although barrel distortion is hardly noticabel, the lens is much sharper and over all "better" (what ever that means).

None of us has worked with the Red 18-85 yet. We know nothing about ramping or distortion. Presumably it will ramp to a certain extend and distortion might be fine but not to be compared to a cine prime. No one knows how ist "feels". Hence, I can imagine that the short Cooke zooms will still have their realm. Nonetheless, the new Red zoom will bring the price of those old Cookes down where they belong.

Pricewise I'm with Stephen and find that more than 5k for a 20-100 are overpriced, especially if you consider that most of the 20-100 are old worn out workhorses.

I would go for the RED 18-85 over an old 20-100 any day. However, I am very anxious to see how the 18-85 compares to a Cooke 18-100. The 18-100 is a better overall design than its 20-100 predecessor.

A 20-100 in good condition with proper working mechanics and no internal problems such as lube contamination, dirt, fungus, etc.. Should sell for $7K or less, IMO. I've seen nice ones for around $5K, but that's been several months and with the current used lens market, who knows. ...The 18-100 is a different matter and they are worth far more, especially if they are a more recent model with the newer style housing. I've been offered over $20K on more than one occasion for my 18-100. If the RED lens is as good as I'm thinking it is, I may just take the next one of those offers that comes along... Maybe... Probably not, I really like that lens...

Yes, but what of the 20-100mm for the asking price of $7500? Assume great condition, and immediate availability (whereas the Red 18-85mm could take months to receive).

Is it really so crazy to pay such a high dollar for this lens? 6 months ago, definitely, but now, in this market?

I have already been kicking myself repeatedly for holding off on buying a lens for my camera, which will ship any day now. Would I be kicking myself again for paying a premium on a lens this old, even if it's in great condition?

What I'm trying to get at, I think, is will the Cooke quality and look on my camera make it easier to live with knowing that I did pay a high price for something that could have gone for half this price a year ago?

Anyone?

I paid $6500 for mine, before the shortage. It was when you could theoretically get a good one on Ebay for $4000.00

To answer your question, no, you will not kick yourself in the ass for buying a 20-100mm at $7500.00. I think you will be very happy with it. Perhaps a little surprised at it's weight and size (12 lbs), but when you shoot that first footage, you will be very happy.

I'd get the Cooke, it's proven, good glass. And there's no shortage of people that know how to service it.

And YES, the world is laughing now and has got even smaller for that sort of businesses.

WTH?........ Lol Are you nuts?

cookes are sold for 2500 € here in germany.....the 8500 € offer is there for a long time...and will be there for a long time...someone is overrating the need for pl glass.

its not more worth then 4000-4500 USD.

ok.. but apart the blablabla.. where are they?.. do you know any one of those?.. interested to buy.

where are they?

Collecting dust in the inventory of a large rental house (have you called any rental houses and asked gang?). Any serious established rental house will have 1-2 of those around yet no one would rent it over the 18-100 sitting there also (not collecting dust).

It is interesting to see that the 2mm focal length difference in the wide angle end of the lenses doesn't seem to draw anybody's attention. Do you guys really not care about a little wider angle of coverage (theoretical only until an A/B comparison proves so)?

The second thought is why are we spending so much time arguing based on speculations. I am sure there are more resourceful people who would run side by side comparisons to illustrate the quality differences, sharpness, color bias, contrast, breathing, distortion and whatnot. Would it be more fruitful to wait for this kind of tests come out and make a comment or purchase decision?

Another practical question for consideration, perhaps best directed to Mark at Off Hollywood:

How much do you think you will charge to rent the Red 18-85 daily? In comparison to the 18-100?

I would be interested to see how clients respond to the Red lens as an alternative, considering they are likely more familiar (and therefore, more comfortable, perhaps) with the Cooke.

Let us know (Mark, others) what kind of responses you are getting to this lens. Thanks!
