I'm looking for the pros and cons between these two lenses from any knowledgeable people out there. I thank you in advance.

I own a Cooke 18-100 and LOVE it!
Its fast: T3 and extremely sharp, very very versatle and has almost zero breathing when racing focus.
I've used the Ang 17-102 and it is a wonderful lens as well. I seem to recall that it might be a bit bigger than the Cooke, but its been too long for me to remember them side by side.
I will tell you that the Cooke needs to have 6" round filters to cover it's large front element. I use P-size [4 x 5.65"] rectangular filters for it and these work fine for most applications. But when using a Polarizer, you will need a BIG one like a 6" round. the 138mm rounds are just a tiny bit too small when you are at the wide end of the lens.
All in all, the 18-100 is my FAVORITE zoom of all time!

They are both very nice lenses.
I prefer the Cooke (I own one) because it's quite a bit smaller and lighter. No breathing either with the Cooke. As a side note, if you focus close with the Angie at 17mm, the zoom effect renders the focal length more like an 18mm.
Cheers,
Harry

Harry and Jeff, thank you both for your quick replies. Quick follow up Jeff, do you like the Cooke better than even the Optimos?

You cant beat the Optimos.
The Cooke S4s are awesome but something specail a about an Optimo zoom.

I see that as the choice zoom for DPs on set.

We just took delivery of some more Optimos. They are by far the most popular zooms. Great, great class.

Sorry, I meant that Abel Rentals now has more Optimos. Rentals has every model Optimo except the Rouge 30-80, which hasn't shipped to anyone yet. For Sales I know that some of the smaller Optimos are available but the huge 24-290 is backordered until April (yes, April 2009!).

One thing to keep in mind is that the 18-100 is a circa 1988 design (and really just an update of the 1970 design of the 20-100) The 17-102 is an early '90s design.
By contrast, the 17-80 and 24-290 are newer generation lenses, late '90s design. Surely there have been advances in optics, and the 17-80 and 24-290 are awesome lenses.
But it's a little apples to oranges. The original poster wanted to know about the 18-100 vs. the 17-102.
And potential buyers of any of these lenses should keep in mind the the older lenses can be found ~ $10,000, while a brand new 24-290 (Mitch correct me if I'm wrong) is $60,000+
Just to keep it in perspective.
Cheers,
Harry

Yea, I have one on backorder...you gave me a ray of hope that they were coming early. bummer.

This brings up something else I've always wondered. How does the Ang. 17-102 compare to the Optimos. Obviously, the Optimos are fantastic, but does the older zoom even come close?

were using the 17-102 almost exclusively on a reality pilot this weekend, so i will let you know how it performs.

Soooo one of these Angies just popped up on ebay and I was looking for reviews... came here to revive this ancient thread.

Anybody got opinions on that 17-102?
