I have some .r3d footage on my computer, and I want to convert it for a format that is easy to edit in final cut, but still with the best quality it can have. I've been looking on the internet, but there's no clear answer on whether i should use Redcine or RedAlert!, or even what settings I should have.

I want the footage to go into a quicktime format, so it's easy for final cut to read, but I just have no clear idea on how to do it. Any info back would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Red Quest.
I am looking forward for the posts

It depends on what you would like to do. If it's just a little bit of .r3d footage then you can transcode it in either RedAlert or RedCine. RedCine is designed as a 'first light' tool sort of modeled after telecine, where you do a very basic corrrection. Once you're happy w. what you see in the display then you can render to a quicktime format that works for you in FCP. There are tutorials on Red.com that will help you get started with RedCine.

RedAlert is similar - you do some basic color correction in RedAlert and render out quicktimes. Rushes is part of RedAlert and can be used to batch convert .r3d footage if you have many clips.

That should be enough to get started.

ProRes 422 HQ

ProRes 422 HQ

Hi
You best QT format for post will be ProRes HQ.
Virtually lossless, 10 bit VBR codec.
Amazing files sizes compared to uncompressed HD.
You can transcode using RedCine or use Log & Transfer in HQ mode.
L&T cut the res by half - if you shot 4K, the files will be 2K.

We are currently shooting on 4k and I try to make those ProRes422 HQ QTs in 512x256 pixel with REDcine to preparing the edit and edit while shooting. The problem is, it takes too much time. The only thing that works, is to use those QT P reference files. But then you always have to carry all data with you, and pre-editing on set is no fun in this workflow. What is the quickest way to create selfcontained quicktimes from the RED RAWs?
