You might want to post some grabs or a little video showing the barrel "in action" at least, something, or this will be both a duplicate thread, and in the wrong section.

How does this differ from the duclos?

Also, can you convert the new sigma 8-16mm?

Irony

Irony

I hope the irony of the comments in this thread are not lost others.

Now, now, let's don't be rude. I think reducing Russia to a producer of Vodka alone is a little unfair. Everybody can't be Matthew Duclos, after all, and if Sergey and the boys in St Petersburg can whip up some nice glass, well god bless him. And if it looks a little like Matthews lens, well that's a Russian tradition too.

I agree Rob.
After all, I would be a hypocrite to criticize Sergey for taking an existing product and changing it. While we did design and engineer our re-house from the ground up, Tokina deserves the credit for making such a nice lens to begin with. As I've said in the past, there is plenty of room in this industry. Besides, I know there are a few folks who wanted the Duclos Tokina but couldn't afford it, perhaps this is a good opportunity for them to get an 11-16mm.

Hi !
Im am can not say exactly what difference from conversion Duclos Tokina 11-16 , we not disassembly Duclos lens 11-16 , I am asked my opticians make conversion Tokina 11-16 /2.8 and they made it during month .
REgarding conversion Sigma 8-16 /4.5 on PL mount it is necessary to examine this lens - prefer with Nikon mount and after I can exactly to say it is possible convert it lens on PL or no . For example when we decide to converted Tokina 11-16/2.8 I have bought for conversion two lenses , one with Nikon mount and another with Canon mount , and when lens with Canon mount were disassembly we have found that mechanism of movement very different that in lens with Canon mount , including that focus ring on the barrel Canon rotate in the other side then on lens with Nikon mount and we refused from conversion Tokina with Canon mount. When I will have Sigma 8-16/4.5 in my hands then I can say exactly can we do conversion or no , or by the other words our opticians can convert it 100% but maybe it not favourable for me because I must to pay him for job .If conversio will be not so difficult during month lens will be ready . But I am can not found who sell it lenses including site http://www.sigmaphoto.com/

Sergey:

the 8-16 was just announced in February at the Photo show so probably isn't available yet.

BTW does the focus rotate in Nikon or cine direction?

As far as the copycat issue, while I am sympathetic since I suffered quite a bit of copying in my early years of making underwater cases, I also know that there were quite a few ways to get the tokina lens on a RED:

I think I was the first with the 11-16 on the RED using the canon version on the prototype Birger mount. Then of course there was the Underdahl Nikon mount which I am pretty sure was copied from the prototype Erik at Birger made and posted on the Birger thread, and became the RED Nikon mount which was updated by Doug to allow iris control which meant you could use the Nikon mount lenses that didn't have iris. Then their was the very nice Duclos PL conversion. Then the Optitek Nikon mount. And now this pl conversion.

As far as the right section issue wasn't the Duclos originally posted in Lens Testsection?:

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26868&page=13

I've promoted the Duclos lens and several of my customers use it with great success but in reality for underwater it pretty much sits at the widest setting and you virtually preset focus - so I'm not sure the normal mechanical precision (smooth and precise focus and iris rotation) that you usually look for in cinema lenses matter all that much. But I'm also not sure that a mere 15% lower price is a compelling enough difference to change from the Duclos version which is virtually an industry standard at this point.

I own and work with Sergey´s Lomo lens rehoused to PL and he did an absolute professional work, smooth mechanism with this old glass, my two cents for the St Petersburg boys.

Vico.

Conversion Tokina F = 11-16 /2.8 , PL mount

Hi !
Last week I have tested my Tokina zoom F = 11-16 /2.8 after conversion on PL mount with projector and results is fine . In zooming from focus F = 11 mm to F = 16 mm resolution not change and I saw the next results - in center 200 lines / mm , on the border 100 lines /mm .
And now I am engraved large figures on focus scale it is more visible , because on original lens Tokina 11-16 figures in focus scale very little in windows and necessary microscope to see ..

Best regards

Sergey

So if you are modifying the Nikon version only then the focus rotation is opposite normal cine glass. I prefer the Canon one since it is the correct focus direction which Duclos is modifying and I have available for rental.

There is one thing i'm wondering as I 've a Duclos on order. I really like the BIG Focus Scale on Serguey's...
Does the Duclos has one ? On the prototype it doesn't look that way.

I know I know, on a 11-16 focusing shouldn't be hard, but I know some focus puller that would be afraid of an AF type ring.
