  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Conundrum...

you use ASIC's when you want to hardwire a function into a chip rather than using software to do it. you can use less powerful chips compared to all purpose FPGA's but the down side is the function is baked in and usually can't be changed which makes making updates a little harder

What's ASIC?

Jendra, the practical rammification here is no flash upgrading like the FPGA chips on the Red.

It means that they'll be doing far less changing once it ships.

What's ASIC?

I think an ASIC is the ticket to being able to start the camera quick (among other things). (is that right?) That's the greatest feature of the new camera in my eye's. (Opinions may differ I know)

As to the conundrum, you guys (Red) have good sense, you know when to keep adding features or pull the trigger and deliver. Whenever you decide, I'm behind you. Holding my breath for the "under 2 second start-up".

edit: slow typing, I guess real computer gurus lined out asics better than I. i'll stick to my day job...

ASIC's will also allow that two second boot we all want. there are ways of upgrading the camera if you only have some functions being performed by asics

The ASIC does lots of stuff... heavy processing with less power (heat), quick startups (less than 2 sec) but is limited to changing things around. We have added other stuff in the brain to provide flexibility. Building a complicated and powerful ASIC is not an easy task.

I think it depends on what you guys will be improving.

If it is the whole DSMC system including how the modules integrate with the brains then I say take as long as you need to get it perfect.

If it is just improvements to the brain then I say get them out as soon as possible. We are expecting to upgrade to new brains eventually so just release the improved ones a year later and we'll just slap 'em in our existing DSMC setups.

Some would say its an impossible task. if you look at the list of companies that do it well there aren't many and they are all biggies. Your walking among giants and holding your own. Bravo

ASIC's can provide superior performance, lower power consumption, lower noise, and less heat than FPGA's for the same tasks. Red's software development process with R1 should have reached a point where at least some of the processing can be hardcoded for the new models without problems.

What's an ASIC? Answer: Blinkin awesome, that's what. It's a new home for the magic pixies.

At this point, the only quibble I have with Red is the delivery date slipping.
I don't want a Red One at this point in my career.
I'm at film school and I want a cam that I can own, learn on, and grow with.
Whenever I mention the Scarlet these days it's always followed by 'if they deliver the damn thing.'

Despite all the improvements and the modular concept, I still want the fixed lens Scarlet.
Every time I finish a shoot these days and cut up the footage, I think 'wonder what this would have looked like in RedCode?'

You say that the store will open it's doors on the Scarlets this year?
Excellent.

Deliver or cancel.
Eather way it's better then wondering 'what might be.'

Jim and the RED team: these last couple of years has been so excited for all of us.
First the RED ONE that everyone thought was a wild dream, you guys made it a reality . Now with all these new products that are coming out soon the future looks great because you guys absolutely change the name of the game.
In my case as excited as I am, I'll be happy to wait patiently. Having used the RED ONE camera I can tell you that every time I step into a set I still get veryhyped.
So thank you RED Team, looking forward to the future and your new line of products.
