CONTROL KNOB issue help

[RED RAPH]

Guys,

After 4 bodies of RED ONE cameras, finally a first control knob for the menu came off. I have already place it back on. It withstands, but everytime I spin on axis, to change the selected MENU choice. Afterwards, it invalidates the right and upper commands.

I discovered that it has an specific position. Like 11 o'clock, that allows for it to operate all directions. The problem is, that in the heat of shooting with one or multiple camereas, this becomes an issue...

Am I close to fixing it, or only RED Digital can do it for me? And return to normal operating. I have a feeling I didn't loose a screw.

Can anybody throw me a bone ?

that sucks, call red... hopefully they could walk you through it or make a suggestion that doesn't involve sending it back, at least temporarily.

I believe that you may have it too far in towards the body. Loosen off the tiny hex screw attaching it to the joystick shaft - bring it out slightly and retighten ( with Loctite threadlock to keep it on ). This may or may not help, but worth a try before sending the camera in for repair.

Try it in the hardware shops on the Rua de Carioca between Uruguaiana and Praça Tiradentes, some of them should have it.

That's great! Seems like you know Rio. That's the first place I went this morning. Not too much luck, no options. Different from the website, there's an specific one, at least apparently, that is less aggressive. I was wondering the choices of the adhesive liquid. Is it absolutely permanent, or is it only for flexible fixing ? I'm a bit afraid of making a mistake in the placement.

Have you done this before ? Is there a margin for a possible placement mistake ?

Hey Raphael.

I have had the same problem on my red, the trick is as told to not mount it to far in, but if you use an adhesive make sure that you clean all parts, I had to go thru a couple of session to make it stick, because there is some kind of grease inside the nob I think, I had a hard time to get it to stick to the knob. I drilled a hole thru the pin so the small hex screw goes into the pin. I had to fix it since I had a shoot, didn't have time to send in too RED. It was a very timeconsuming thing to make that small hole in the pin. But it worked for me.

Try it without Loctite first, confirm it's working fine. THEN mark the position and Loctite it with the weaker red Loctite 222.

Yeah, I know Rio, I have a beautiful place with friends in the Serra de Mato Grosso, where I wrote two of my books. And we co-operate with universities in MG.

The hints from Carl-August and Eric are very good, that's more or less what we did too, since we didn't want to send it in to the US with all the customs hazzle.

While it can be tricky to drill a hole in the pin (or even make a dent), it might be a better solution than any glue. But be careful, it's tiny!
