Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Hi all,

Does 21mm FE Distagon paired well with Contax Set? Since I'm looking for a wide angle option.

Hello everybody,

does anyone have experience using clip-on matte boxes with Contax Zeiss lenses?
I have built a small set so far: 28/2.8, 35-70/3.4, 50/1,7 and 85/1,4. I'm in love with them all, and I'm wondering if putting a clip-on mattebox would be too much for lenses that were not designed for that kind of weight...
I've found, especially for the 35-70 and 85, that some flags to block light would be useful.
The Tilta mni matte box seems to be light (around 140g): https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1524975-REG/tilta_mb_t15_mini_follow_focus_clamp.html/specs
But then adding filters and other accessories may too much...

Any thoughts?

Short answer, don't do it if you care about your lenses.

Plenty of replies on the same subject in the past on this thread if you want to know more, which is a must read btw if you own Zeiss Contax lenses for C/Y mount. ;-)

Thank you!
Yeah, I think it might be just safer to stick with rods then.

Oh and yes, I've been checking previous pages from time to time, especially when I was deciding on my set. Your name rings a bell on this thread actually. Crazy to see how long it is! :)

Hi everyone,

I have my little set of contax with cordvision rings and 77 variable ND.
I just bought a wonderful 18 f.4. As everyone knows there is no filter thread. Does anyone have a suggestion to use the same filters on it or a similar system of the rest of the set?

Thank you guys.

Hey Michel,

both Duclos and Simmod have step up rings for lenses with no threads on the front like Zeiss C/Y 18mm and Leica R 19mm V2, using set screws, so you can definitely have 77mm threads ;-)

Of course vignetting can be an issue if your VariND is not taking FOV into account since the filter would be slightly too far due to the 80mm OD lip, so you should use a VariND with as much wide coverage as possible.

Usually many 77mm VariNDs have a larger front pola glass and wider front threads of 82 or 86mm for example.

Grazie Tommaso,

I have an Heliopan slim. Hope it works... Do you have suggestion on which is better between duclos and Simmons concerning vignetting?
And, by the way, talking about hood for any contax. The good choice is still the cavision recommended by Nick or now in 2021 anyone have other suggestions?

Thanks guys.
This thread is magic.

Michel

Hi all,
first off thanks for sharing the knowledge, this thread has been invaluable to me as I am currently putting a set together.

What I seem to be lacking is the 85mm 1.4 MMJ, does anyone have one for sale?
Im based in the UK.

Cheers
