  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

It's the 16mm F/2.8 AEG Fisheye. For underwater work the absence of horizons/straight lines and the need to get as close to the subject as possible make this lens a very interesting addition to the arsenal.

Nick gave it quite a spectacular review, so anxious to get it into the water.

Oh... wow. That's really interesting, if you have results that you can share sometime it would be great to see them! All the best.

I see from your website you are an underwater guy as well William, happy to share results as I am able. As soon as the lens arrives, it ships to Peter at RP for Leitax mount and gearing, so might be a while.

The 16mm fisheye is SPECTACULAR. Level with the horizon, it actually doesn't distort that much.

Underwater... yes, once-upon-a-time! In the days of super-16mm, Aatons and Arri's and mainly in the high Arctic. Not so much these day's... leave it to the pro's like you Tom!

Black Friday

Black Friday

You are going to hate me. Found a classified ad this morning for a 28mm F2. The guy said it's a Black Friday offer, 200€ for it. As new. I thought it would be a scam, or maybe very used. But hey, it was 30 minutes away from my place. I called, he had many calls already, but nobody showed up. I was the first. And indeed, except a couple of little marks, it's really as new. AEG. The Hollywood. 200€. It just made my day !!! 😁

Fantastic! Congratulations.

:coolgleamA:

I once found myself at 130 ft, camera in housing, lens cap still on...

... Ha ha, really love that! I turned up at a shoot with all the kit and had left the film stock at home in the fridge. It took several hours to get it!
(BTW This could be a new thread 'Embarassing moments')

Hence my question to this forum's C/Y lens brain trust: Does anybody here have any knowledge -- first-hand or at least on very good authority -- as to the size of the image circles projected by various other C/Y prime lenses? As well as whether they hard or soft vignette and how well sharpness and image quality hold up as the edge of the image circle is approached?

(Although the size of the image circles these lenses project is largely irrelevant for video use these days, as the size of sensors used in video cameras continues to increase, I believe this information will be handy to have in the future and I will happily compile a summary of my findings and share it here.)

FYI, the ones that interest me most are the 15/f3.5, 18/f4, 21/f2.8, 25/f2.8, 60/f2.8, 85/f2.8 and 135/f2.8, but information about any of the C/Y lenses will be much appreciated!

As it happens, I can now answer my question about the size of the image circle projected by the C/Y 21/f2.8, which is that it will allow for shifts of approx. 5mm in any direction and vignettes hard past that point.

Unfortunately, this makes it less useful for my purposes than I had hoped, especially as the amount of distortion increases significantly once any area outside the 43.3 mm (i.e., 35 mm format) IC for which it was designed is included.

Oh, in case anybody is curious, the Zeiss ZF.2 21/f2.8 projects an almost identical size image circle as the C/Y 21/f2.8 and also displays the same significant increase in distortion outside of the 43.3 mm IC. :cryin:

Alright everybody. I had some spare time on my hands so finally got around to doing what I've wanted to do for a while.

My Contax set is now complete and have been modded, but it's always difficult to tell the 80mm fronts apart (duh, they're the same...)
I have seen a few different ones but thought I'd make my own stickers and make them available as a print ready file to everybody who needs this.

Would love some feedback; is there anything that can be changed, is missing or should be removed?
I have tried to include the bare minimum and thought adding whether it's MM or AE would be useful as many of us have a 28mm AEG, 60mm AEG and so forth.
Obviously these are just quick mockups and by no means pixel perfect. They will be kerned properly, spaced for optimum legibility and tested before being made available.

I started with these six and in metric because these are the ones I own and because we use the metric system in Denmark. If the interest is big enough I'll make for all of them in both metric and imperial.

For the design nerds: The logo is a vectorised and altered version of the Carl Zeiss Jena logo, the numbers are in DIN (in my opinion the best font for legible numbers) and the details are in Roboto Mono.

Anyways, let me know what you think!

Nick, coming from you that means a lot! Like so many others you're the reason I discovered these great lenses. Is there anything you think should be different about the stickers?
