Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Thank's a lot to both of you!

Well, I wouldn't really call that Mutar a lemon, having tested the Minolta tele extender (which has no bad reputation either) on some of my finest Rokkors.
I'll hunt one down for my 180 f2.8 for sure!

In case nobody saw this :)

Thanks for your advice about the Mutar II. I found one that looks like "old new stock" – even the box could be in the display of a store – for 138,- €.

My first tests show that even with the 180mm f2.8 wide open (well, of course it's 5.6 then) it has very good resolution into the corners and the famous Zeiss micro-contrast. Yes, there is some CA, but it's not very strong and should be fixable in post if it ever get's too obvious. I'll post some tests with a far away object, but yesterday I saw too much heat shimmer and this morning it's raining …

Edit: OK, no rain any more and not too much heat either. These tests are demanding, I used my Sony A7R (36 mpx) in the corner and the center. I'd say that the Mutar II is nearly neutral: it just enlarges the mild CA that is already there. My 1:1 crops are from a church about 730 meters away. The smaller number which is nearly readable in the center crop is a tad smaller than a sparrow I saw sitting there while focusing… The lens was stopped down to f4, since even at that distance focus is quite critical with this.

This is the corner without the Mutar:

And with the Mutar:

My Rokkor 200mm with the Minolta 300-S extender is holding up quite well, though, but it's a full stop slower (shot a bit later and the wind had turned):

After wrapping a rap video this weeked I was able to get a new showreel together that is all about Contax glass. There are only a couple of exceptions, the Sigma 35mm ART and the Tokina 11-16mm, and they intercut pretty well. The rest is all Contax and Dragon

I like this 15 day reel idea. It takes the pressure off digging through everything I have ever shot! You really have to share that rap video when done, Paul. I have no idea what to expect from ladies rapping in Malaysia / Singapore, but I am excited!

Thanks, Jeffrey. I wish all my fortnights were as reel-worthy.
I've got to admit that I'm not into hiphop very much any more and this particular beat sounded quite uninspiring, but the girls are a lot of fun and their humour and sensuality shines through. They've also got big fan bases here so we're expecting it to go a bit viral. The one in the orange top and curlers is a famous R&B singer and it's the first time she's featured on a rap. It'll also be the first 4K video for the music industry here, so hopefully I might get a bit of extra work out of it. I need to do more of these because they're more fun than corporate stuff.

I hear that. Chasing the fun stuff is good for the soul!

And nice use of "fortnight"!
