Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Speaking of hollywoods, I just just mucking about having an 'instrument-off' with a friend who took a macro to his cello.

My 30sec turnaround response with the Hollywood on the 6D. That lens is ridiculous.

A graphic artist in a lens – wow!

Not sure if you guys have seen this, but Chris just posted another fabulous Epic + MoVI + Contax piece he's working on. Take a look. Some great, great stuff! (As always from Chris)

Some beautiful flares, too!

Thanks for the shout-out man! :-)

Hey Jeffrey, how's the focus ring on the Sigma? I was in NY for a couple of days last week, but forgot to check it out at B&H...

cheers.

Hey David, sorry for the delayed response.

The focus ring is pretty freaking awesome. BUT, it is not a fully manual Contax kind of awesome.

It's basically the best focus ring on any modern auto focus lens I have used. Better than canon L, etc.

Screw it! I just made a super lame video showing me slowly twisting the Sigma 18-35, then the Contax 85mm, which is buttery smooth. MAYBE you will be able to get something out of it?

Hey guys, FYI...I've had my Sigma "modded" by RP lens and they added HARD STOPS to the focus...which is pretty useful. Also added gears to Zoom and Focus rings, which is of course also convenient.

Nick

How much was it? Did they smooth out the mechanics at all? How do you like it?

Can't remember what I paid. Wasn't cheap. As they had to open up zoom, add hard stops, and add two focus gears. I wanna say btw $300 and $400. But was much more affordable than an actual "mod", and yet still very production friendly, so seemed like a happy compromise.

Overall, the construction of the Sigma is superb. Huge lens. The focusing is very commendable for an autofocus lens. The Tokina 11-16 feels much more "plasticky" when you focus - feels like a toy by comparison. The Sigma is a noticeable step up in construction and mechanics, for sure. I was impressed.

oh wow! thanks man! I appreciate it! looks good enough... gotta get my hands on one.. I really miss a wider angle some times, and the 25mm is amazing, but it has a special character of its own that I don't necessarily want to use in every shoot.

is it obvious to get the EF version or the Nikon one has an aperture ring?

that's interesting Nick! thanks! they gotta love ya over at RP Lens! =)

BTW, I shot a short film last weekend and I'm just in love with the 35, 50, 85 1.4s trio... they all match perfectly and have the same special character wide open, especially the 35 and 85, soft but "sharp enough".
I shot them on 5K Full on the Epic, will post some screens as soon as they let me.

cheers.

No worries, David!

I DON'T THINK the Nikon version has an aperture ring. I was looking into that myself recently.

What is breaking my heart at the moment is that I may have to sell my 18-35 since it won't really work with my upcoming GH4 (yes, it looks like I am jumping from Red as my primary camera over to a GH4, don't kill me). I have a great adapter from metabones for my Contax lenses, and there are other lenses I will be using with a highly regarded Chinese Canon EF to M43 adapter, but without electronics, I can't use the Sigma. :-(
