  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Very nice shadow detail, Roy. Some people don't like the ninja stars, but I do.

Totally agreed. The Ninja-stars can add fantastic details, even add a "graphic" element to shots (to quote Brice).

@Roy - lovely, lovely shot. Hows that 360 shutter working out? I've never actually tried that...

He shot at 50 fps, so I'd not expect smearing like 360 degrees at 24…

I think a few of the lenses might hit or obstruct the mirror on the 5d, not that I ever experienced it.

For the record, I use Contax Zeiss glass pretty much exclusively these days (aside from macro and ultra-wide) on Red, Canon 6D and 5D MK3 and have yet to find a problem with my lenses.

Great to hear Ben! Can you post a shot from it shot wide open set to infinity of something landscapey?

would really appreciate it!

cheers

UPDATE: I got the 28mm back today all fixed and regreased and declicked and it is a thing of beauty. Bokeh monster!

Exactly right. Back in the day, some CY lenses (and other glass with adapters) had a tendency of hitting the 5D Mark II's MIRROR. People were known to shave down their mirror and perform other surgeries to get around this. It would appear the Mark III has solved some of this. As a RED has no mirror to speak up, this clearly doesn't come up.

Can someone tell me if:

For example: Contax Zeiss 85mm 1:1.4 and 85mm 1:2.8
If i stop down both lenses to 2.8, is there much difference in performance / sharpness?
The same with e.g.: 135mm f2 and f2.8 ...

Maybe someone who owns both lenses could tell me.

Thanx, JU

I own all 4 lenses, and stopped down to 2.8 you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference, especially on a S35 sensor, where variances in edge performance no longer become visible in a practical way.

Im personally a strong proponent of both the 85 2.8 and 135 2.8, both are some of my fave primes. FYI the 85 2.8 MM is supposed to have undergone some housing modifications, in order to reduce flare (so AE flares more). The 135 2.8 MM is strongly believed to have had it's design updated (expect modest improvements WO vs the AE - which nonetheless still a superb lens).

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that´s what i was hoping.
Thank you very much!

I can confirm this from my experience even with the Sony A7R in full frame. The only one where I found an obvious difference was the two 28s, as I reported recently. Maybe it has to do with the fact that all my fast ones are AE, while my slower ones are MM. At least the coating is improved on all of them, but I like to have this choice according to subject.

BTW, of course the Zeiss C/Ys shine on my new favorite stills camera too!
