Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Got some frames from my latest Contax project. Still love these lenses even though I've shot my last 3 projects anamorphic.

So I want to Leitax my new Contax AEG 28 f/2 with a canon Mount. (Would have preferred Nikon but that seems to be a no go?)

Which Leitax mount do I want for this lens? The Narrow or the Wide? Or maybe the one for both? Can't really make head or tails of the webpage

http://www.leitax.com/Zeiss-Contax-lenses-for-Canon-cameras.html

Thanks for the help!

I started to write up the guide to the different leitax mounts from their site with a view to having a comprehensive list of which mount if needed for which lens but then got bored...

If anyone wants to take it and carry it on by all means do so...

1 -
This is the Canon bayonet for Contax AEG lenses with Wide and Narrow diameter mount, but without screws at the base of the mount.

This is the Distagon 25/2.8 AEG lens.

The G letter means made in Germany.

These lenses have no screws at the base of the mount, but three screws at the top.

You can see only two screws, the third one is located under that curved piece.

Other AEG lenses with a wider mount diameter are also compatible with our mount.

2 -
This is the Canon bayonet for Contax lenses with Wide diameter mount, with screws at the base of the mount. (MM and AE type)

Also included four necessary screws, as the original ones are too short using this bayonet.

Our mount will work only on Contax lenses with screws at the base of the mount.

This is the Sonnar 180/2.8 MM lens, as you can see, this model uses the wide mount.

3 - This is the Canon bayonet for Contax lenses with Narrow Diameter mount. (only MM type)

Also included four necessary screws, as the original ones are too short using this bayonet.

This mount will work only on MM Contax lenses with narrow mount.

This is the Distagon 35/2.8 MM lens, it uses the narrow mount.

To recognize a MM lens with narrow mount, check if it has this square plastic
tab.

4 - This is the special mount for:

- Contax MM 100-300/4.5-5.6
- Contax AE Macro-100/2.8
- Contax Mutar II and III

Included longer screws for the Vario-Sonnar 100-300/4.5-5.6

Our mount will work only on Contax lenses with screws at the base of the mount.

This is the Sonnar 180/2.8 MM lens, as you can see, this model uses the wide mount.

Just email David from Leitax at the info email address on the site. Whenever I was in the same boat, not sure which adapter I needed for whatever Contax lens I just bought, then I'd just check with him. I always got a prompt reply.

greetings from orange county guys.
im debating on which taking lens set i should use with my iscorama 54.
the old contax or the ZF. does anyone know which flares more?
thanks.

thanks Brian.
now its just down to either contax or the old minolta rokkors.
i have a rokkor 50mm rokkor 1.4 and i love the color rendition and the flares on this thing,
but i haven't seen any comparisons to the zeiss contax yet.

I'm torn at the moment whether to go for a Hollywood 28mm or to get the Sigma 18-35, seeing as I need a 21mm as well.

PS - something else to consider is the Sigma doesn't cover Dragon across whole range. I believe it covers from 21 or 24mm on up.

My 28mm Hollywood just arrived, waiting to adapt it. beautiful lens and build quality, was much much much smaller then I imagined. cant wait to start shooting with it.

The 28 2.8 is even smaller (size of a 50mm!), but that said...yes...the Hollywood is very compact and slim (55mm thread). Have fun shooting with it!!!

thanks Brian.

Depends on which Rokkor. MD or MC? The MC's are older and flare a lot, like Contax AE's.

And yes...Rokkor glass is beautiful!! Very hard to convert to EOS mount, but great for NEX mount!

Patrick your frames look stunning, as always. Love the haze.

PS pulled out the 25mm AEG on a shoot today. I'll try and post footage next week if client lets me! It was a fun one. We destroyed stuff.

thanks Nick,
i have the MD version.
i read somewhere somewhere some MC performs better than MD.
i have the iscorama 54 MC, so horizontal flaring is a bit more challenging to show.
i'd like to have the classic 60's-70s film look as well as have the ability to easily show horizontal flares if the client/director wants it.
my line of thought was to find vintage glass that easily flares.
i also noticed the minolta rokkor thread, maybe i should start asking questions there about the minolta rokkor glass.

Go ahead, I started that thread, you can ask here ;-)

I have a whole set of Rokkors (most MC, some MD) plus most Contax lenses between 28 and 180.

My suggestion would be Rokkor MC - flare nicely and have gorgeous bokeh that can look retro and full of character.

Just leitaxed the 35mm, 85mm and 300mm. Makes a world of difference!

BOOM. Yeah once you Leitax, you never go back. Feel the force Ben, feel the force.

PS I can't wait to test your Dog Schidt lens!!! I'm going to break it out on a fashion shoot once it warms up!

I had one Leitax mount on my 25mm and my 50mm came already cine-modded with a custom hard canon mount but they really are a different world compared to anything else. Just the 135mm left to do now :)

Can't wait to see what you do with the Dog Schidt lens. Already regretting selling it but I'm sure it's for the greater good as Operation Downsize continues apace :)

For the record, sticking a streak filter in front of it - even the cheap vidatlantic fishing wire one - can yield very very cool results...

Changing the subject somewhat...

I know it was discussed about 20-30 pages back but in the end did anyone ever post any Jena Flektagon 20 f2.8 clips? Very interested in how they look.
