Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

@Domenic

Do you think the Sigma goes well with the Contax Zeiss glass? Did you need a lot of grading to match them?

I'm considering one for wide and fast, since the 18mm Contax doesn't appeal to me and the 21mm is soooo expensive.

Personally i think the sigma cuts together with the zeiss pretty much flawlessly. Im a big fan. Ive sold my 25mm because of it.

Dealing with one 'Daniel Reed' (NEXTBOOTH) who sold me an Item that was not as described.
When I got in touch with him to notify Him and arrange a return... He sent me the msg pasted below...
Demanding $75 Restocking fee of a $225.00 used Quick plate(Used Over 1Yr)... and refund will be 1month after return has bn received .
Mine was bad because I fell for his paypal gift/family payment option he suggested.
He has refuse to reply my numerous Msgs... I see him come online from time to time.
His claim was I change my mind...which is a Lie... beware of DANIEL REED (NEXTBOOTH)

interesting... is it an AE or MM copy? I don't think mine renders as dreamy as yours. Hummm... going to test it out now.

EDIT:
85mm f1.4 MMJ @1.4 shot on a Panasonic GH3 with Speedbooster adapter.

Yep! Dreamy indeed... lovely.

Here's a Project Runway AllStars S3 spot with Alyssa Milano, shot this winter. Scarlets with modded Contax Primes. All her footage was shot on greensreen and composited later.

For this spot, her shots likely the 50 1.4 MM or 85 1.4 MM @ f4 (where it's razor sharp). No filtration.

I still marvel at how versatile Contax primes are on small shoots like this: multicam, small footprint, matching glass a must. Studios in NYC can be pretty tight, and our crews aren't often that large, so the modded primes are very convenient.

When budgets/schedules are tight, renting two or three Optimos becomes impractical. So far it's been rewarding to see the in-house set of Contax primes delivering on job after job.

It's becoming common to see 3 to 5 cameras on promo shoots (two interview stations at same time), so I'm happy my Contax primes are ready for that level of coverage (all while packed tight into several Pelicans).

The Scarlet never ceases to amazing me either. The show footage looks dated compared to elements shot on RED.

I was just going to comment on that... they must have used standard 2/3" HD 60i broadcast cameras, with ENG Zoom Lenses... I mean, it would be tough to shoot a "reality" show with Contax Primes... but you get my point.

Promo looked great Nick. Why so many booths/cameras needed for pieces like that if you don't mind me asking?

Stills look great Joshua.

Did a shoot yesterday where I forgot to blacksgade properly and there's afair bit of noise in the shadows for darker scenes. Bugger. Salvageable, but not really in keeping with my 'only high quality' mantra for 2014.

I honestly sometimes come here to just oogle your guy's shots. Thank you for continuing to feed my addiction. haha

Do any of you gents like to use your lenses for still photography? I think it seems like Ben certainly does! I'd love to Leitax my lenses, but I also like the idea of being able to mount my Lenses on a variety of cameras. Plus I have an old Contax film SLR I still get some milage out of.

As for adapters I use the big-is adapters off ebay. The black and gold versions can be a bit pricey, but no more so than than the fotodiox pro adapters. If patient, you might find them as a bid in which case they can be had for as cheap as $12! I had tried a bunch and was not impressed by any of them (cheap ones and fotodiox included). Pretty happy with the big-is adapters so far.

I'll probably separate them... I'm thinking on getting a 45mm or a 50mm 1.7 maybe even a 35mm 2.8 to use for stills...

True, and it's clear why the C300 is fast becoming a reality work-horse. We're seeing that footage more and more, and it looks terrific - certainly when compared to these venerable ENG approaches.

We had 2 Scarlets on Alyssa, but could easily have used two more RED's in another studio for interviews with the cast. Didn't have the time or budget, but that system happens a lot.

A number of promo shoots now have the following setup: 3 cameras on main stage, usually a medium and tight looking into camera, and then a third angle as a cutaway (either ex-cu on hands, or a very wide off axis shot).

Stage 2 will have another two cameras setup as an "interview" station for rest of cast - for BTS, for promos, for sizzles, etc.

Make sense?

Thanks, Nick! They've been great for me, tying to find them a good new home...

Just got a few lenses from Tom last week. They were in excellent condition, work great, and shipping was super fast.

Thanks for the great deals Tom. :D
