  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

I doubt anyone on here would be prepared to let a Hollywood out of their sight but if anyone wants to trade their 28mm f2 for my Leitax 25mm AEG AND either the 35mm f2.8 AEJ or the 300mm f4 MMJ (both with fotodiox pro adapters) do let me know :)

Love this frame and texture.

Contax 18mm w/ 70/86 ring AND step down 86-77 ring - does it vignette at 4K?

I lucked upon a good deal on a Contax 18mm mint copy that included a 70/86 ring... most of my ring filters are 77mm

Has anyone tried using a 86-77 step down ring. I'm curious about vignetting at 4K

86-77 step down rings aren't much a local commodity, so i have to order one from Hong Kong and wait 2 or so weeks to test myself.

If anyone has tested this, and it worked out OK even at 3K, are their any better made ones then the $7 ebay variety?

Thank You

Anyone one know a good lens shop that makes custom adapter rings; perhaps cordvision or duclos can make a custom version?

For the 18mm, I have the 70/86 ring and use a step down adapter as well (like you plan to do). This setup doesn't vignette at 4K, but once you stack some filters...it does. Thinking of ditching the 70/86 to be honest, and having RP lens add a delrin 80OD ring to the outside of the lens so I can slip on the Cavision Hood (or ring w/out the hood). That way I can avoid the vignetting once my filters start to stack.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks guys! Getting into detail: those shots are in RedGamma3 and were rated ASA 500, f5.6, with a Tiffen ND/IR 1.2 screw in filter on it, and no SunShade, the shot with the girl I had the lens on 35mm position and the wider one I think it was on 28mm.

Throught the shoot, I've been using the Contax Primes with a Fotodiox C/Y to EOS Pro Adapter, and it has a looseness too it especially with the 25mm and 35mm, the 50mm and the 85mm fits nice and tight, I may be able to regulate it though, when I get back I'll experiment. The 25mm though (not sure if it's because of age) doesn't lock on the adapter and if spun it sets loose, so from yesterday I stopped using it in big camera movements. Again, I think I'll be able to fix it.
I'd definitely recommend Leitax mounts, I haven't used it, but I'm sure it'll work best.

I didn't use follow focus at all, didn't feel the need in this shoot since I pulled all focus myself, not ideal, but it's what I had to work with at this moment.

The cordvision fronts are amazing indeed, they are sturdy and reliable, and I used the screw in 77mm filters, even with 2 stacked up and it doesn't give. It's nice and tight, always.

The Cavision hood is really great, but the rubber part kept falling out quite often, but if careful, it'll hold. I'm thinking of gluing it on.

I have to say, if I didn't have much money to invest, but wanted to start buying Contax lenses, I'd get the 28-85mm zoom, one fast prime (whichever you use the most), and one Macro to start with.

And yeah Nick, the long focus through is really nice.

Another observation is that with the adapter, all primes go past infinity, but not the zoom... not sure why. Again, I'll have to test it out at home with more time.

Cheers.

I know it ain't cheap, but Leitax are certainly best way to go. Once you go Leitax, it's hard to go back. It's taken me over a year, but almost all my primes are Leitaxed by RP lens now. Only missing a couple at this point.

Epic/Scarlet with...

Any feedback gratefully received.
Nice job Ben.
Like you said it has to be much shorter.
And from what I saw in your versatile reel, it is tempting to use more music.
Passed 30 Sec you should change the ambient anyway.
Those people get bored so quickly.
Cheers

Thanks Brice. WIll stuck up a final one tomorrow. Now I'm enjoying a lovely single malt after 7hrs of driving and 6hrs straight of shooting. Doing interviews at f2.8 with the subject 3ft away and 20min takes, 30sec break and 20min takes over and over. My eyes are watering from not blinking trying to maintain focus.

@Domenic

Do you think the Sigma goes well with the Contax Zeiss glass? Did you need a lot of grading to match them?

I'm considering one for wide and fast, since the 18mm Contax doesn't appeal to me and the 21mm is soooo expensive.

Yes, of course.

That's why I have the Hollywood and the three 1.4 lenses (in AE) plus everything from 28 to 85 in 2.8 MM too. So, I'd rather like to know how the Sigma goes with the latter ones.
