  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Here's a little piece I shot with some Contax glass. 35-70mm was the workhorse for most of the shots here. Additionally used the 85mm f2.8, 85mm f1.4, 135mm f2.8 (LOVE this baby), 50mm f1.4, and also the Tokina 11-16mm, and a shot or two with the 24-105 in the b-roll.

Super rushed grade, stayed up till 5am finishing it the day it was due haha, but still came out pretty well! That 35-70 just has such a charm to it. Used it for the main straight-on shots during the poem delivery. Love the bokeh and microcontrast

Shot on my C100, its no red but its still quite the camera ;)

Thanks Nick. The 35-135 would be amazing for the range. Let us know how it performs. I am trying to decide between the 50 1.7 and 1.4, as both are quite affordable. Anybody have any bokeh comparisons of the two?

The 1.4 is more solidy built (all metal), and has more "classic" bokeh. But not as sharp WO as the 1.7, which has slightly more "busy" bokeh, which I kind of like.

Looking good Matthew. Are you shooting WO during the poem? I can see the circular bokeh in the background, so hence my guess. You're right, the 35-70's "pop" is really showing in this piece, thanks for showing! And the bokeh looks great. And I agree with you too, the 135 2.8 is a beast!

The c100 is a GREAT camera! definately makes my recomended list at it's price point! (though BMPC may knock it off, we'll see!) But a great camera.

Thanks man!! Means alot coming from you Nick! And man I wish I remembered... I wanna say one of the shots between the two straight on shots was at 3.4 and one was at f4 but I forget which.. I think The wider one was f4 and the tighter shot (which I think was all the way in at 70 or close) was at f3.4. Its crazy, i'm used to shooting with really fast lenses, I had an all voigtlander set with my GH2, but now that i'm using contax glass on my C100, I can get great subject isolaton even when I have not as shallow depth of field. People who think the microcontrast thing is just us zeiss-heads being weird are completely wrong haha. its there for sure!

Leitax, Night and day difference!

Agreed. Leitax IS the best. It was a contagious experience for me. Once I lietaxed a couple of my lenses, I had to do all of them. The Lietax mounts were SO SOLID, they removed ALL PLAY on the RED EOS mount, and Peter at RP lens even said they seemed sturdier than EOS mounts on standard Canon lenses. Our regular DP is a HUGE FAN, as well, so everyone is happy. I highly, highly recommend.

They are roughly the same price. Some a bit cheaper. Others like the 35 a bit more expensive. Looks like a good deal. I have an 50 f1.4 EF mount. Quite happy with it. But these are the standard speeds. Some of the ef mount I had a quote on were faster. Still interesting. Loads of lenses coming out. Good luck to us :)

Gl just released a whole set of contax pl lens set for 10k.

Is anyone interested? doesnt sound too bad at 2k a lens. FJS have them listed.

The mods look great (we know that), but 2K per lens for the 25 2.8, 28 2.8, 35 2.8, 50 1.4 and 85 2.8 seems a bit much. If it was the Contax Supers (35 1.4, 50 1.4, 85 1.4), the 10K total price would make more sense to me.

That being said, GL optics decision to stick with these budget primes is worth noting, as most of us here on this thread have already noticed ourselves how remarkable these primes are.

The 25 2.8 has noticable edge "fall off" on full frame, but its RAZOR SHARP in the center, and on S35mm (ie a cropped sensor) can give good results, esp stopped down.

The 28 2.8 is a beast not only because its SHARP wide open, but because it has strong EDGE-to-EDGE sharpness even on a full frame 5D (esp the revised MM versions)...meaning it will DESTROY on Epic Dragon.

The 85 2.8 is similar...it may be better edge to edge on full frame than the 85 1.4. You wouldn't notice this on S35 (cropped sensor), or possibly even on Dragon, but still...this prime is also...spectacular.

I think the 50 is a 1.4 though. Have to check. I received an e-mail as I had previously purchased one of his lenses. He doesnt like selling lenses one by one so you have to dish out 10k at once. Might be a problem for some.

The 25mm is soft in the corners, even on a GH2. So I suppose it wouldn't be better on S-35.

But the 28mm 2.8 and the 85mm 2.8 are very sharp WO.

Uli, you're right...I double checked the MTF charts, and yes...WO it has soft corners even on Micro 4/3rds. For some reason I thought the edges fell off later. Stopped down at 5.6 it gets more muscular, even on full frame.

On the positive side, my West German AEG flares like a champ! One of my favorite flaring primes.

Stupid thread, forcing me to buy an 85mm MMJ f1.4. If I had kids I'd be holding you all responsible for taking the food out of their mouths...

I don't want to be responsable for Ben's decision but sorry mate I can't resist posting some sample.
The 100/300 is becoming slowly my main lense for wild life shooting.
