Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

I've got a brand new converted EOS Contax 24-85 N on the way. From what I've seen, it's essentially a revised version of the 28-85 but two touch, wider and corrected CA and distortion issues. I'll put up some samples compared to other Contax zooms and primes.

Sounds very interesting, Shervin...I'll look forward to seeing the images you post! I love the look of my 28-85, but the one touch does have some drawbacks.

WOW. Very interesting. Yeah post samples!!

Right now as it stands I don't think it's going to be a hugely popular choice for shooting video with as the focus throw is hilariously short, however, from my preliminary examination there seems to be quite a bit of magic in regards to contrast and the 3D look. As with all Contax zooms I guess you do have to sacrifice the traditional mechanical operation in order to reap the beauty they possess :)

It won't be for another week or two before I get mine so you guys will have to wait patiently. I'll put up tests as soon as it gets here.

Sounds good Shervin. Looking forward to it!!

PS...I hear you, the Contax Zooms are almost all excellent...if only the mechanics were a bit better for video! They'd be amazing. Can you imagine not having to to worry about things like "push pull", etc? But if you don't need to "zoom" in while you're shooting, and just treat them as variable primes (reframing as you go)...they are AMAZING. I love mine.

And ironically, for ONE MAN BAND "run-n-gun" shooting...the "push pull" zoom design actually makes it EASIER to pull of shots (which is what the push pull was designed for...to speed up the framing and focusing).

So for fast doc style work, you could argue the push pulls have an advantage, if used properly.

I mentioned I'd post this a few pages back. Nothing special compared to a lot of other things shot on Red, but this was shot entirely on a 35-70 and a 80-200 (about 80% the 35-70). Graded in Da Vinci Resolve Lite. All shots are a little bit post-sharpened (most are at .46 in Da Vinci. A few are at .42 and a few are at .48; for those that don't know that's on the "Blur" scale that goes from MAXIMUM SHARPNESS at 0 to MAXIMUM BLUR at 1). Shot between wide open and f4. Maybe a shot or two were at f5.6. But really, most of it is wide open. One shitty little light on a stand with me, and then light from the window and the fluorescents in the shop.

Made quite liberal use of the Macro function at 35 on the 35-70. So that's more of the reason I'm posting this; I had trouble finding good examples of that functionality before I purchased my own and tried it, so I hope this helps someone make up their mind to buy a copy of my favorite lens.

I jumped the gun too quick... looks like it's not actually in a two touch rehousing since there's a gap between the middle focus ring and the iris ring, indicating it still slides along. Still, it's not too bad of a rehousing for the lens... you'll just be stuck with push pull. Also I think the front end still rotates, so not much improvement on that front either.

Looking good!

Yeah I noticed that too. Still looks push pull to me. If they'd solved that, I think it would be a big leap forward.

Anyone know how their re-housings work for primes?
